S&W 617 Front Sight

Post by recumbent » Sat Mar 15, 2008 10:01 pm

Last year sometime i saw a link to a web page for an aftermarket 617 front sight with a gold bead.

But like a dummy I didn't bookmark it.

Anyone have a link to it?

I just got a 617 and would like to try the other front sight. My eyes aren't what they used to be.

.170 I found the SDM but the shortest they make is .250

I can get a Millett target rear blade but not sure what height Millet to get that would work with the .250 front sight.

The revolver is 22LR six inch barrel.

Hi-Viz makes a fiber optic front sight especially fitted for a 617.

I want a front sight similar to what came on the gun but with a gold bead on the rear.

I'll run downstairs to measure the rear sight blade.

Where should I measure?

Measure here.

There is another option, just buy the gold bead from SDM and install it yourself. They sell them for $20 each. http://www.sdmfabricating.com/Gold%20Bead.htm

OK, without taking the sight off the gun I measured .369

The millett sights are available in .310, .360 and .410

Looking at the measurements, your rear is roughly equivalent to the .360 Millett replacement rear. According to my calculations, if you bought the .410 Millett rear, you'd still be .030" short. Looks like your best bet is to install a gold bead on the existing front sight.

Thanks,
I have a drill press, wonder how hard it is to install the pin on the front sight?

It's just a roll pin. You can drift it out and remove the old sight. Measure .0625" down from the top and make a mark. This would be the centerpoint of the .081" (#46 twist drill) hole for bead shank. That measurement will put the top of the .125" bead dead even with the top edge of the front sight.
