S&W 41

I've had my 41 for 20 years now and it just doesn't fit me right. I recently started shooting bullseye at my club. I find that the distance from the back of the grip to the trigger seems to be too close for the size of my hand. Has anyone else thought this to be true? When I seat my hand all the wat tight to the back strap, my trigger finger goes way past the front of the guard. When I try to put the first joint of my fihger on the trigger ,now I'm all cramped up! Feels so unnatural! This cramped feeling gets me to shaking only after a few seconds. If I get my grip by setting my trigger finger first, then I have a gap between my hand and the back of the grip. I do shake less this way, but it's hard to get the same grip everytime. Custom grips might help, but I would rather have the trigger closer to the front of the gun. Does anyone make such a trigger?I also thinking of just changing pistols to a Kimber target rimfire. Any thoughts?

Hi Blazer,

I put a set of Herrett's Nationals grips on my 41. I have long hands and I like the way these grips feel thicker so that my index finger doesnt sit at an extreme angle if I put the first joint on the trigger.

The cost a lot less than the fancier anatomical grips.

Thanks for the pic of your pistol. What kind of price tag for the grips? I saw some from Fung, that were almost $300. I really like the looks of yours though. I really got the bullseye bug bad. I bought a Springfield 1911 two tone 45 cal that is being worked on as we speak. I asked some of the better bullseye shooters at our club for the name of a local gunsmith. I found a guy that works from home and comes with a lot of good references. He said all I need at this time is a new barrel bushing, and he is going to check the trigger weight. Also having the slide drilled and tapped for a Clark mount with an Ultra Dot. I have a Leupold crosshair scope on my M-41.Thanks for the help, and I'll take all the advice anyone has for me.

Custom grips may fill up your hand more. I have large hands and I use a set of Herrett's National Match grips on one of my M-41's. That model has been discontinued but the Automatic target stock is a very close substitute.

A set of Morini grips could do the trick too. Champions Choice shooter's supply carries them. http://www.champchoice.com/detail.php?item=M936

Another solution could be an add on trigger shoe. The shoe mounts on the face of the trigger and will add a little more depth to the trigger's feel.

Hey Bullseye where would I get a trigger shoe? Can it be removed if I find I don't like it? It's Sunday morning and today is our indoor league! Can't wait!

Tigger shoes typically mount via a couple of set screw's as the shoe fits over the trigger, so yes to removable.

Trigger shoes are an accessory that bolts onto the factory trigger via set screws. These can increase the width and the length of a trigger. They are typically made for specific pistols to match the curvature of the factory trigger. Here is one place that has them for S&W M-41. http://www.t-grips.com/SandWtriggers.html
