Optics for Mk II

Post by sniper » Sat Nov 17, 2007 9:11 am

Well, it looks as if iron sights are pretty well finished for me. Bad day at the range. I had a really tough time even getting on paper!

My aging eyes have a hard time getting consistent groups. I have tried ONERAGGEDHOLE sights, white paint on the front sight, white insert front sights, with the Redhawk rear sight blade, and the Merit Optical Atachment, all to no avail. :(

I do just fine with my scoped rifles, so I guess I will try a Weigand base and some flavor of optical/red dot sight on my MK II Target. I really hate to do that to what I think is a handsome pistol, tho... but it will beat not being to shoot at all.

Does anyone have suggestions for an economical, but reliable red dot or holographic sight? Do they even make holsters for the combination?

There is one 2X sight that is supposed to have a reasonable red dot size. Has anyone had experience with it, and is it worth a try? Or, is a standard non-magnifying sight the way to go?

Thanks.

I have an Ultra-dot on my Mk3 and love it. I don't have a lot of experience with optics but most people that shoot my Mk3 talk favorably about the red dot and ask me where they can get them (My range pushes Aimpoints exclusively). They aren't really "cheap" but they do come with a life time warranty, and most models include polarizing filters which being in south Texas, I find myself using a lot.

I have the Matchdot model, it has adjustable dot intensity, MOA (2, 4, 6 and 8 MOA)and it has a 30mm diameter tube, it cost $185. But I think I'd more likely recommend the Ultra-Dot Four, they have adjustable dot intensity, adjustable MOA (4, 8, 12, and 16), and either a 1" or 30mm diameter tube.

You can get them here http://www.ultradotwest.com/ , looks like they are offering free shipping now.

For inexpensive and reliable red dot sights I've used Tasco Accudot and Propoint sights but Tasco has gone out of business. Something along the same line would be one of the Simmons 30mm red dot scopes (Optics Planet has them for $55-75). http://www.opticsplanet.net/simmons-red-dot-scopes.html

Or you could always go budget and get a BSA 42mm at Walmart for around $30-$40.

If you want to spend a little more money then go for an Ultra Dot. I have several in the 30mm tube size. They're great scopes.

I have not found a factory made scope friendly holster for the Ruger 22 Auto. Most people just modify an Uncle Mikes with a scope cut-out.

sniper,
I had the exact same experience. No fun! The remedy for me was a Millet SP-1 red dot scope. I found it here for considerably cheaper than the usual outlets.

I also ordered the BC Blizzard Scope Covers. Like getting a new set of eyes........ for me.

With some help from Bullseye I modified my holster as shown
Now I have both a MKIII and MKII with the same set up.

My shootin' went from the Braille method to respectability via the red dots. Shooting's never been more fun!

another vote for the ultradot. its a bit more money, but the optics are outstanding. i also have one of the cheaper Truglo dots and the difference is night and day.

also a vote for ultradotusa.com, some of the best service I've ever had ordering online.

I have a BSA 30mm, Bushnell Trophy and an NC Star holo. The BSA does very well. The only problem I've seen with it is that it tends to washout on bright days. The Bushnell has a polarizing lens on the front and isn't affected by sunlight like the BSA. The NC Star worked well then started having problems with cutting off. It needs repair and I haven't yet checked out their warranty service.

I've fired a pistol with a millet red dot and liked the scope.

I had a Tru-Glo red dot on my Mark II and it really made a big difference in offhand groups. Pretty much all the inexpensive red dot are the same (ie. made in China) and get about the same results.
