New MK III owner......

Bullseye's answer to the new member with his new Mark III was sure a help to this new member...so much so that I've printed it out. Especially helpful is the "Righthanded Correction" chart. Stay healthy Bullseye. You really make this site one I check every day.
I'm awaiting my permit here in Connecticut both to buy the new Ruger Mk III and also to join our very fine local gun club. Permits take a long time to get here. The state really doesn't want one to purchase a gun, even though all we want is to hone our skills at the local range and the comradery of fellow gun lovers. But I'm retired and can wait them out. In the meantime sites like this one do nothing but build my knowledge of the sport.
I'm going for a Red Dot and custom grips also. Just sold my large model railroad, so I've got the cash to do about anything I want...But I'll start slow and keep reading.
Thanks again Bullseye for all your help.

Abutt1: welcome to the forum.
best of luck with your (pending) MK3.
which specific model are you (planning) getting ?
It seems really odd to me that NY, CT & MA
are so well known as the "home" of some of the
finest names in US-FireArm mfg.. but it is the
'arm pit' (excuse the comment on your area) of
FireArm-Friendliness...
take care and let us know when you start shooting.

Wow! Thanks for all the replies....it look like to me that sight picture, trigger control, and stance will be the most important things for me to watch while I'm trying to develop my skills. Bud, I have the target model 5.5 inch bull barrel, so as you know it doesn't have the Hi Vis front sight.
Thanks again,
J.R.
Thanks again,

Actually, CT has a very good licensing system. I, a NY resident, applied for a CT permit. they told me it would take 7 weeks from when the paperwork was submitted. The paperwork was fairly simple. seven weeks on the nose, my permit arrived.
CT also does require a permit for home possession and the permits do not specify the weapons. NY on the other hand is a pain in the neck with paper work and requires an amendment to the license for every purchase or sale.
While we do have some very bad elected officials in NY (virtually all of them - Schumer, Clinton, Bloomberg and Spitzer), we do have a strong pro gun contingent in the population.
I shoot in a club in CT and we have many active friendly members who are more than happy to help newbies and provide sage advice.

Wolffatwin: thanks for the insight/info, I'm happy to know that
my prior-info/opinion was somewhat in error...
what is the eval/assessment of 'MA' ?
TX is basically "OK". I'm still a believer that you should have to
cause some threat/damage to be a violator... not just have a
.22 cartridge in your doorway (I *think* this happened in NY some
months ago...).
I was sad to see that WMT is scaling-down their 'Firearm' sales
in the larger-Metro-Stores. (we can all bash-WMT, they're the big-guy),
having visited with the Dept-Mgr a few times at a nearby store,
I think I understand the underlying problem. Some of it is just
"market"... not all neighborhoods are a market for FireArm sales.
But since each store (ie. Mgr) is its own FFL ( ATF will not issue a
chain-FFL, only individual store... is this correct?) ... therefore...
the paperwork-errors by the part-time/minimum clerks that the
ATF dings them for... goes against the Mgr-FFL... so, D'oh, if
you have too much trouble getting the paperwork correct, you
may as well stop... since your mark-up doesn't cover all the extra
"handling/security" of having firearms in the store...
One incident he related (at another store ?) was the "Instant Chk"
involved transposed numbers on a ID/DL... and since that did not
match anything to reject... it was cleared for sale... but the buyer
was on the 'felon' list...
Oh well... the recent news item that reported some 270-million firearms
are in the US (ie. one-each for 90% of us)... ((or was it enough firearms
for 90% of the HouseHolds?)) I wish it had reported 90% legally
had firearms... and the other 10% were guarded with guns.

I can't speak about MA with any actual knowledge. This state by state licensing is somewhat stupid. I can drive a car with a license from any state anywhere in the U.S. I can even drive a car with a foreign license and a valid visa. But even if I have a license validly issued in NY State, I can't carry in NYC. Do I suddenly become irresponsible when I cross a state line? I do become a better target however.
Walmart is not in NYC. The stores in Westchester do not carry firearms but the ones in CT do. I think it has more to do with the marketing and lack of sales than any ideology. curiously, you can order from Walmart online and pick up at the local stores.

It would be "convenient" if FireArm "licensing" were reciprocal in allwolfflatwin wrote:This state by state licensing is somewhat stupid.

states, as are Driving/Marrying licenses...
but with the different political-attitudes, I'd rather not have any
"centralized licensing"... reciprocal-yes...
WMT: I really doubt that you can "order" a FireArm OnLine to have
it delivered to the store... My experience is that you have to place
50% down for them to place the 'order' at that store... OnLine is
just FYI on the firearms... and the online info is not complete,
there is a OrderCatalog at the dept with the full-line available.
take care.

Hmmm. if marriages were like handguns, would you be married if you went from one state to another? Think of the possibilities!
The recognition of marriages across state lines is based on the "Full Faith and Credit" clause of the U.S. Constitution. I'll have to find out why it doesn't equally apply to firearms.
