Ruger Mark II Target Taper Barrel Iron Sight Options?

Post by alienbogey » Sat Jan 23, 2010 9:54 pm

Here's the deal: I have a Mark II Target, 6 7/8" taper barrel with (so far) the factory sights with which I'm trying to beat all the optical sight guys at my local club's Sunday pistol target shooting competition. I am THIS close to being able to do so. I just installed a VQ trigger kit, now it's time to improve the sights.

Note: Optical sights are NOT an option as the point is to beat the scope and red dot guys with just my plain old eyeballs.

Note 2: Part of the problem is that I'm competing with black rear (factory) sights, black front (factory) sight, against black 2" clay pigeon targets against a black background. The devil-inspired match director will also do such nefarious things as paint the clothespins that hold the clay pigeons to the chicken wire black, and paint the wire itself black.

Question 1: I've looked at the VQ rear sight for the Mark II. It looks just like the factory rear target sight I already have. What, if any, is the difference and advantage?

Question 2: With the factory rear sight blade and front sight, there is a fair amount of space to be equalized on either side of the front sight as I align it in the rear blade notch. Are there narrower rear sight blades available? (Can't find any)

3. I've tried painting the front sight blade with Brite-Sights paint, but the result is disappointing, at least partly due to the 'reverse' cut of the front sight - it doesn't really reflect light very well.

4. How about fiber optic for the front sight? Problem is, I can't find anything for the MK II Target with tapered barrel.

5. Any other suggestions for front and/or rear sights? I need good contrast against a black target against a black background, as well as precision and quick alignment.

I've been toying with getting some extra front sight blades and trying some Bubba engineering to get a fiber optic light pipe in there somehow.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Front sight

I too have been trying to improve my shooting with stock sights on my mark 3. I recently put a piece of white label material on my front sight to contrast with the black target. After trying it I felt it helped. Next step was coloring it with a "hot pink" magic marker. So far I think this is working better as there is less glare than off the white and still good contrast with
the black.
