Red Dots

I've been looking at some red dots for my MKIII slab side and so far I'm less than impressed.

The ones I've seen all seem to have a blurred dot or sometimes even a double image of the reticle. (Wasn't just me, the clerks saw the same blurs and double images.) These were lower end price range, Truglo, Busnell, etc. in the $80.00 - $120.00 range.

I'm wondering how much you have to pay for a red dot that shows a crisp red dot.

Any input on the Ultra red dot that Rim Fire Sports carries?

Appreciate any help or direction.

I have an Ultradot Matchdot on mine and couldn't be happier. The dot is crisp and clear.

I've owned several brands and tried a few others. While the Ultra Dots aren't perfect, they are the closest I've found. While a circular dot is also very important to me, durability and having NO parallax are equally important. Before you purchase a dot turn it on and aim it at something about 25-50 yards away Brace it against a wall or display and while holding it very still look at the dot while moving your head from side to side and top to bottom. If the dot appears to move you will have parallax problems. You will deliver a perfect shot and if the dot was to one side of the tube you will hit an entirely different point. I had some real issues with a Tasco PDP series that cost me more than a few points. I have experimented with some brands that had 2" of parallax at 50 feet.

I differ from some in that I only use the 1" dot with the 4 min dot. I have used 30mm tubes and also the match dot 4. With the changeable dot I always felt the most comfortable with the 4 min dot and the larger tubes only gave me more to be distracted with. I now have 7 of these in my family. I also replace the rings immediately with Weaver low rings. The rings that come with the dot are, in my opinion, lousy. My wad gun has a slide mounted dot and the factory rings do not allow me to remove the dot cor a thorough cleaning. Weavers allow me to take it off and reinstall it without having to re zero.

I had over 33,000 rounds through my first slide mounted 1" UD on my main 45 wad gun. During that time period I had it repaired by Larry's (he is the warranty station for UD's) one time for a tension spring replacement. That happened at Camp Perry in 2003 when he was there shooting and maintaining a booth on commercial row. He repaired it after my center fire match (around 11:00) and before the team match the same afternoon. I finally replaced that one with a new one in 07 before I went to Perry. I needed a dot on a new 22 and figured the new dot should go on the 45 and put the old dot on the 22 where it still is.

When I decided to try a Red Dot, I decided to start wit an inexpensive model since I wasn't sure I was going to like it.
I got a BSA for around $30. It has a sharp dot. In the bright sunlight I have to turn the intensity to hi to see the dot but in darker conditions I use a lower setting (around 3) and get a sharp dot. If I turn the intensity much higher, the dot gets fuzzy and sometimes doubled. Turning down the intensity seem to correct the problem.
I have since decided to go back to open sights as I can do much better at 25 yds that way than I can with the Red Dot. I suppose its all in what you get use to!!!

I've used Ultra Dots for years. I have used the UD25 and UD30. Tried the Match Dot, It operates fine but I don't personally care for the multiple reticles.

Well I know I'm a bit late on offering any input since the Ultra Dot Match Dot 30mm from Larry's has already been ordered, but I just wanted to let any future red dot seekers out there to consider the Osprey Holographic Sight. I put one on my MKIII Hunter awhile back & I am extremely pleased. It only costs $60.00 for the version I got from OpticsPlanet. It did take a little getting used to since I'd never used a red dot before, but once I got it zeroed in, it shoots like a dream! I'm knocking off used shotgun shells on a rail at long distances (If I can see it - I can hit it!!) It even holds zero after swiching reticles & removing sight from gun for cleaning!
