Sig Mosquito
I was looking at a Sig Mosquito in the shop the other day, and was wondering if anybody has any info on this gun in terms of reliabilility and such. I thought sig has a good reputation in their products and the the price of this seems reasonable. Any input?

A nice pistol that has the feel of my 229. Mine has been flawless with Federal Automatch,CCI mini mag, Remington Subsonic. It is nice to have one double action rimfire. It come with two different recoil springs to allow the owner to match the spring to the load. I've never changed out the one it came with on the if it ain't broke, don't fix it rule. Heavier and better made than the P22. Regards

On the Sig forums most report it is picky on ammo, mainly when new. Most say it take about 1000 rounds of CCI mini mags before the failure to feed problems go away.
Now some have had good luck with the 22 conversion kits to fit their current frame.
After hearing of all of the problems I went with the MKIII, my other choice was a Bucksmart.
One of them will not lock the slide back on the last round. Don't recall which one, sorry.

Every time I start thinking about a Mosquito, I end up getting another Ruger. One of these days I may get half serious about a Sig and there won't be a Ruger in sight.
blue68, In that price range either the Ruger or Buck Mark are hard to beat for accuracy, reliability and capability. Matter of preference. I think my preference currently runs Ruger 5:1.

The Mosquito is double action designed to be an inexpensive trainer for fans of the big Sig's. The purchase of a $30 thread adapter makes it one of the least expensive to host a suppressor. You can carry it with a round in the chamber secure in knowing that the hammer is not cocked. Sometimes it is desirable to be able to easily have the firing pin strike a reluctant round again. I consider it an apples to oranges comparison to any of the single actions. It competes in the market with the Walther P22. I've owned both, and the Mosquito is the better of the two.

That could be damning with faint praise. I have a P22. Fun little pistol, but it suffers from some really cheap, poor design and workmanship. It is the only firearm I own that required disassembly and polishing to prevent it from self-destruction (see RFC P22 Bible). I haven't done the mag mods so the second round often fails to feed. I bought the P22 new at a price well below any I've seen. Sitting next to the P22 was a used stainless Single Six at the same price. I've often thought I made the wrong choice. It competes in the market with the Walther P22...the Mosquito is the better of the two.
If the Sig is better-built than the P22, it would certainly be a better buy.
Interesting, I did own a P22. It was the H model (2007) and I believe that they fixed the magazine (you want the B ones) and the extractor was changed. Mine happened to love Remington Golden bulk and I went through 7 of the 550 rd bricks with at the most 2 or 3 duds per brick. I also ways try duds in my Henry to see if they are really duds, they were. Anyway I kept expecting it to break because it is so light, but the guy who owns it now reports that it is still going strong. So, perhaps yours will as well.

Don't tell Bullseye, but I purchased a Sig Mosquito. I have put about 800 rds thru it, and it is just starting to accept ammo other then CCI Mini Mags. Earlier, it would have many failures: FTF, FTE. Most of the problems are with the extractor, it just plain doesn't work with some ammo. Even with CCI's it has a hard time extracting a unfired round. Other then that, it works great. I placed a live round in the chamber and it fits awful tight. Does anybody have experience with the breech end of a barrel loosening up after time? It now shoots Rem Thunderbolts quite well. I like the gun for it's "centerfire feel" to it, and I bought it for Pistol Self Defense class. I used it there once and it worked great, and saved money on ammo. I might have call Sig to ask them about it.

After extensive testing with 7 different ammo's , the only ammo my Sig Mosquito shoots reliably is the CCI MM's, in either the 36 or 40 grain version. I have resigned myself to the fact that it is a picky eater. I haven't tried Fed AutoMatch or Remington Subsonics yet, but I suspect it will not prefer them either. I thought my Ruger was picky, not so. I still like the semi-auto 22lr feature of the Mosquito though. It feels great in the hand. I have a Sig hoster for it that the Mosquito locks into place, so it makes a great Defensive pistol class trainer.

Once you hit the 1K+ mark with the CCI, it may then take the other ammo. This is the consenses of most on the Sig forum. Apparently it take that number to weakened the RS and break the gun in. But then some say CCI Only.
Have fun with it, I like my Airsoft for training. I can shoot it inside and avoid the heat. Shoot any time I want to with out leaving the house.

Well, right now it's loving the MM's. I can buzz right thru the mag's in no time. I shot the Mosquito at a 22lr pistol competition today, and I say it was not made to compete in such matches. Most everybody else had long barreled Ruger's or Buckmarks, and my little skeeter barrel just couldn't match up. It is not a target shooter, more of a technique practice shooter. I have fun with it though.
