Over travel....post travel

Post by Jack D » Wed May 06, 2009 12:26 pm

Dry firing my new 22/45 MK III I noticed a sudden drop of the muzzle when the trigger/sear "breaks", releasing the hammer. Obviously caused by the sudden release of pressure on the trigger.

I'm an experimenter. I found a sponge rubber button in my junk drawer. You all have one. Right? Junk drawer that is. This button is about 5/16" diameter and 1/16" thick with a sticky back. They are used for door and drawer "silencers" on cabinets.

I stuck that button on the trigger guard behind the trigger and......Wow! What a difference. Now the trigger pull is constant. There is no sudden release of pressure and no muzzle drop. The trigger contacts the button just before it breaks. This may not work for you, but it makes a tremendous difference on my pistol. They make these buttons in many different materials. Felt, rubber, sponge rubber, cork, etc.

For what it's worth. No mod's necessary.

That trigger has an overtravel set screw in it, The screw is internal and near the top of the trigger. You have to remove the trigger slightly to get at the screw to adjust it.

I'll know soon enough. I have a sear, connector link and extractor coming from VQ tomorrow. Strange that Ruger would put in an adjustment and not adjust it. In fact it is not even mentioned in the manual or shown in the exploded view. In the meantime, this button works wonders without harm or modification to the piece. While it's down, I'll consider a pre-travel mod of some kind.

Here's a link to the pretravel mod. http://www.guntalk-online.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=651

In this picture the overtravel screw is visible in the dull silver Mark II trigger near the top.

Why they don't adjust them anymore is beyond me, I'm guessing it eats up too much labor time so they cut it.

The amount of effort required to adjust overtravel is a great selling point for the VQ trigger.

It sold me. I have been enjoying it since.

The VQ trigger and sear made a believer out of me...almost no pre-travel and no over travel....worth every penny....

The VQ disconnect link solved my pretravel problem. Slightly over 1/8" travel before and about 1/16" with VQ disconnect link. This is measured at the bottom of the trigger. I think 1/16" is about minimum to ensure positive latch-up of hammer/sear. There was indeed, a post travel adjustment in the stock trigger. It was a loose fit so I used Locktight. Adjusted to just release sear and very slightly over. The new VQ sear made the trigger pull light and crisp.
