My notes about modifying the MKIII

Post by lucam » Thu May 14, 2009 1:08 am

I recently purchased a Lipsey's Exclusive Parkerized MKIII. I did a lot of mods to it right off the bat. I really enjoy fine tuning things so don't blast me for spending $. I like doing this and I learned a lot.

Clark hammer pin/bushing
This made a huge difference in the amount of slop inside the gun. The MKIII is pretty sloppy from the factory. I like it when parts fit nice and tight. I had to spin the hammer bushing's largest outer diameter down so it wouldn't overhang into the notch on my VQ hammer.

Clark Trigger (w/ pretravel mod)
Again, the amount of slop inside the gun went way down. Over and pre-travel adjustments are nice. I used a 6-32 set screw. It was almost too big. Don't follow my lead. Use a smaller one (4-40) if you plan on doing this mod. Dissapointing - the trigger had a lot of burrs on it. Plan on using some sandpaper and refinishing

VQ Accurizing Kit
Not as great as I hoped. There is a bit of creep still in my gun. Nothing as close to what was there before, but I was hoping to eliminate it. Everything was well made. VQ MKII hammer and Clark bushing eliminated the Mag Safety.

Mag Safety vs No Mag Safety
If you have a MKIII mag safety plan on disassemble and reassembly being a huge pain in the a$$. Also forget about dry firing. Also a pain in the a$$. The washer mod works great. I tried it.

Wolff trigger spring VS. VQ trigger spring
Get the VQ one. It's shorter and gives a lighter pull. The Wolff sits somewhere in between the factory and VQ spring.

LPA rear sights
I got the LPA TPU rear sights as an experiment. I never liked how high the front sight was on my older bull barrel. The LPA TPU allowed me to move my front sight down .12 inches. This will improve holster work and let me keep a quality adjustable rear sight. Good quality. Pictures soon

VQ Spring Loaded Magazine Ejector
Sweet idea. Not really necessary. Keeps the magazine low in the grip frame. See other post.

DIY- Ruger Trigger Blast Shield/Shim Spacer
Great idea. Made mine out of .0075 inch stainless steel. I had to lower both the Clark trigger at it's highest point in the frame and file off a bit of the top of the disconnector. Mine fits into the receiver like this (LINK) but is shaped more like this (LINK)

GRIPS
It came with Hogue Extreme metal grips. Very comfy but I hated the look. I now have the Hogue rubber grips. Sweet for the price.

Are you sure you used a 4-40 pretravel set screw? Or was it a 6-40? The 4-40 is the smaller of the two and one of the smallest you can get in SAE.

Sounds like gunsmithing is in your blood.... please let us know how it preforms on the range.

Thanks Bullseye. I stand corrected.
