Should I get a scope or a better red dot?

Post by Z400ACDC » Sat Mar 14, 2009 12:45 pm

My cheap BSA red dot does a real good job, but the dot is a little fuzzy, if you know what I mean. I thought about getting a scope. I don't want to spend over $150 for the scope and mounts. What do you think. Should I get a better dot or a scope?

You might want to check out the StrikeFire red dot from Vortex. $149.00 shipped to your door. I put one on one of my AR's and I really like it. Real good warranty too.

I hate to possibly be the bearer of bad news, but some of us more shall we say, mature shooters experience the "fuzzy" thing due to our eyes changing. All I'm saying is to have someone else with known good eyes check out your red dot before you take action if you have not already done so. That said, in your price range take a look at the Millet with four different dot size plus many intensity settings complete with mount for under $90. Regards

I thought about my eyes. I am 44 and use glasses. My friends see it also. It is not bad. I guess I just want more. Don't we all!!!!!

Well, you are smarter than me, I need to wear my glasses to read and really should have them on to shoot. Do take a look at the Millet if you like the idea of the four different dot sizes, or the 1" Ultra Dot if the one dot size works. I would say the four Dot size Ultra Dot, but it is $200. My favorite is the Burris Fast Fire $170 because it is so small(4 0z) and doesn't over power the top of a pistol like the tube style. Regards

I have one of the $30 BSA red dots. Seems to work just fine. You need to increase the power on bright days because it doesn't have polarizing lens caps. I also have two Bushnell Trophy red dots. One works very well. The other, multiple reticule, will be tested if it stops raining this weekend.

Last year I happened by a yard sale and picked up a Leupold 4x pistol scope. The scope is great, but 4x magnifies my natural wobble so much that I only use it when I'm trying 25-50 yard stuff from a rest.

I prefer red dots for general paper punching when I want something other than open sights. I'm still fighting the need for visual aids for pistol shooting. I've been shooting the 22A with a Bushnell and it generally shoots more consistently than the Rugers or Buck Mark. Must be the 22A is a superior pistol and nothing to do with old eyes and a probable need for a prescription change.

The Bushnells run from ~$80-$100 depending on where you get them.

My first red dot was a BSA that I found in a Wally World clearance bin for $15. Still have it and it works just fine for the price. My favorite red dots are the 25mm and 30mm basic UltraDot sights. Have several of them now and couldn't be more pleased. Here is a link to check out: http://www.ultradotwest.com/ultradot_2008_002.htm

Hi Z400ACDC, I am using the Burris fast fire on my Mark III 22/45 and I'm very pleased with it. I also have the Ultra Dot Match Dot On my 45 wadcutter & I love that one also. In comparing the two I would say the fast fire allows you too see more on either side or above when you are looking through the glass, not good if you are easily distracted, the Ultra Dot has a more traditional view like a rifle scope(comparison only). I dont have a problem switching back & forth between the two. Others that have only used the more traditional view say its slightly distracting to be ably to see more. The burris is lighter & smaller but, you cant switch to a different brightness or dot size. I do like to be able to switch the dot size. I have sighted in the Ultra Dot on its smallest dot setting but, If im having a bad night shooting I can make the dot bigger to almost completely cover the center black on the target. Works for me. Where as the burris I sighted in at six O'clock at the bottom of the black for center. Either are good. I will also say my burris is slightly fuzzy & not perfectly round. The Ultra Dot has a better red dot but, it too is a little fuzzy. I think thats just the nature of the beast. I can recommend both. One thing Ultra Dot has above all others is a lifetime warranty. Good Hunting.
Best,
Athena

Aimpoint Micro H-1 and the R-1 (stainless finish) are the cat's ass. Super small & lightweight and you can leave it on for 5 years.
They say the dot is 4moa, but I think the dot is actually like 3.2moa.

Fuzzy Dot

If your dot has an appearance like a comet with a tail, try rotating the scope while looking at the dot. If the tail rotates with the scope, then its the dot. If the comet tail stays in basically the same position while the scope is rotating, its your eyes. Welcome to middle age.

I'm also a believer in the 25mm/1" Ultra Dot. I currently use them on 7 different pistols.
