I had no idea there was anything that advanced in 1790. Taking 1500 strokes to pump up would have been pretty exhausting, and I wonder how long it would hold the 800 PSI. Not so good if a bad guy got the drop on you because your rifle had a flat............. :roll:

Some time back in the 1800's, the Swiss equipped their troops with large caliber air rifles.

Other European countries protested that the air guns were unfair, and eventually they shamed the Swiss into going back to black powder.
