I have never understood the demand for custom parts. I can understand wanting more precise function, etc. in a firearm for match use. It just seems that no one is happy with any factory gun until they've replaced half of it with custom parts. Are factory guns that bad?

Changing grips is fine. That's no different than adding a steering wheel cover on a car. The metal parts are what I mean here.

The 1911 is the classic example. Does anyone buy any maker's 1911 model and leave it box stock? Did you also know that you can build an entire "Ruger" 10/22 without using a single Ruger part? And spend well over $1000 doing it? I think it's a little crazy.

I know, I eliminated the LCI and mag safety on my Mark III. I would prefer a Mark II upper and hammer bushing with a Mark III lower. That is what Ruger should have done. The trigger, extractor, etc. work fine for me. I clipped some mainspring coils on an H&R revolver. Otherwise, every gun I've owned in my life has been left factory stock, and I've been quite happy with them.

Since the 1911 was design as a military gun, accuracy (<8") was not a requirement. The guns were built loose to have functionality with out failure. Custom parts came out to give this gun accuracy. You can buy a 1911 that is very accurate out of the box these day and have a great trigger, but your going to spend some money. Since lawyers have a big impact on what mfg do, some mfg elect to have a gun with out a Hair trigger. On most guns to get a a very good trigger requires hand work, which adds to the cost of the gun.

Personally I thing a DA gun is the safest to carry. But the 1st shot can be a challenge for some and require more practice. A SA gun is the easiest to shoot and are generally preferred, but people freak out when they see a hammer cocked on a gun. Mainly because they do not know anything about guns, the BHP and 1911 come to mind.

In general lighter the trigger the more likely the shooter is to be more accurate. Heavy triggers cause you to twitch impacting shooter accuracy.

All of my handguns have had custom trigger work done.

Not everyone wants aftermarket parts but I'm glad that they do because it keeps me busy.

Some are just fun to tinker with and tweak. Ruger's MK's and 10/22 seem to be built for easy tweaking.

What is really good idea but hard to do is to tweak the shooter and not the shooter?

I resemble, er resent, those remarks.

Some folks just have an innate desire to tinker and "improve" things. Cars, computers, new granite counter tops, firearms. The tinkering always makes them perform better, to the tinkerer, at least.

If it wasn't for the tinkerer at heart many of the world's greatest inventions might not have been discovered. To change things is human nature.

Right you are, you have to make changes to see what happens, sometimes it makes an improvement and sometimes it just screws things up and then there are the tinkerers that have an instant combustible experience and blow their selves to kingdom come, hope they left some decent notes for thee next guy.
A lot of things have been discovered by accident when looking for something else.

The good news is that we can keep our blasters box stock and be well served as long as we buy quality, well designed firearms in the first place. That said, I believe that it is also the good news that there are those in the aftermarket who see a need and respond with custom add ons. To use my Smith 41 for an example I wanted to be able to shoot with a sound suppressor in place as it allows me to shoot in a close by legal area without noise distrubing neighbors. I also find myself doing more of my shooting with a red dot sight. Ray of BULLY Barrels has designed an aftermarket drop in match quality 41 barrel with a built in sight mounting rail, and he will thread it for you to screw on your legal suppressor. In less than a minute I can return my 41 back into it's stock configuation, but I never do. Regards
