Red dots with multiple reticles

Post by Jack D » Wed May 27, 2009 3:28 pm

Bushnell Trophy red/green dot with four reticles mounted on Ruger 22/45 MkIII.

I sighted in using the circle/dot reticle (which I favor) then test fired two rounds at each bull with different reticle. They seem to group along a vertical line very nicely, but all other reticles are grouping higher than the sight-in reticle.

Is this common among multiple reticle red dot type sights? I tested several times and it is consistant.

More common than not. Remember the source of the dot/reticle is being reflected off the inside of the objective lens much like a fighter jets Head's-up display (HUD). The sources are not in the same place an this changes the point of impact as you switch through the various reticle selection choices.

Thanks, Bulleye. I wondered if it wasn't something like that. Nice to know though. I'll stick with the one I like most (circle/dot) and remember the others shoot higher (at least at 40').

Parallax

Jack,
I would also check the dot for parallax. If it's present and the dot is anywhere but in the center of the tube with your eye directly behind it you will have the results your targets indicate.

FWIW

I think I was pretty careful about centering the reticle, but I'll try again with that in mind. Thanks. I was planning to check parallax anyway to see what effect it had. One of the reasons I like the circle/dot reticle is the circle makes it easier to center and faster to find. With a single dot, it's sometimes 'out of view' until I wiggle the piece around a little. The crosshair works similarily, but tends to blot out the small targets. It (the crosshair) is not a very fine line.

MAYBE?

Post by lilblkgun » Fri Jun 12, 2009 9:25 am

i'm new here from virginia ,GREAT JOB ON THE FORUM. i have one of them type of red dots and i'm thinking about putting it on my ruger mk ii comp and after reading what it is doing for you , i was thinking it could be used almost like a mil dot knowing where the different reticles are hitting on the target at different points. like the one you like is dead on at 40' and the next could be 60' , than next at 80' and so on. all you would have to do is set out targets from 40' out and see where they hit dead on and write it down . just a thought. when i get my finally on i'll see if it works or not. it's just a idea :?: thanks to all who is here for a great site!

points of impact

lilblkgun,

I'd go ahead with your testing, but I think you'll find the high velocity of the 22 LR cartridge is sufficient to go from a zero at 50 feet all the way out to 50 yards with very minor bullet drop. After about 60 yards I start adding some elevation.
