Defensive driving

Post by Hakaman » Sun May 24, 2009 10:18 pm

Well, I got my CPL the other day, and it was an interesting event. I must say, there are alot of people getting their licenses. The group I was in had about 75 people with last names starting with f and g. I read in the paper today about road rage. They were giving tips on "how to deal with road rage". The point I specifically remember is that alot of people are carrying guns, so don't mess with anybody. Just yesterday a woman got impatient behind me as I was waiting to turn on a red light. The traffic was extremely heavy so I couldn't turn. She beeped her horn at me, but I had to wait til the light turned green. I then proceeded. She raced around the corner after me, almost broad-sided me, and flipped me off. It was like she was on medications or something. What a nut case. Sometimes a person eggs another person on to get a reaction, but I didn't do anything to encourage this. I am going to be more aware of people now, and try to stay away from these types. It is getting interesting out there!

There's a lot of distracted drivers out there too. The other day I saw a lady obviously distracted while driving, she was putting on make up in the rear view mirror, and as I passed her, she was texting too. I just shook my head in disbelief, it takes all kinds. Just look around as you drive at all the people with their hands glued to the side of their heads talking on cell phones, you know they are not devoting their full attention to driving.

Young ladies must be in contact by cell phone at all time. One of the guys at my club and a very good friend that I shot clays with a lot had a young lady run into hem when he stooped for a traffic light. He said she got out of the car to survey the damage and she was still talking on the phone. I hate to take call on my cell when driving because it distracts me and that bothers me a lot. If what they have to say is quick, alright other than that I tell them I will call them back shortly when i can pull off the road into some parking lot. Got a nice radio and CD in the car and rarely use it either as it distracs me also.
You have great day and shoot straight and may the Good Lord smile on you.

Too True...

Post by Tigerbeetle » Wed May 27, 2009 2:02 pm

It may be partly age, though I won't admit to it, but carrying on a conversation with a passenger is a whole different ball game to me than talking on a cell phone. I have to agree with BAOM, I won't carry on an extended conversation on the mobile phone when I am driving. It seems like to much country side goes by that I don't remember after I disconnect the call. Kind of scary. And people I see driving and doing other things is unbelievable. Several years ago, a young gal next to me in traffic was trying to put on a pair of panty hose. I drive a P/U so there was no doubt as to what she was trying to do.
Work is for people who don't hunt, plink or fish. Now that I am retired, I hunt, plink and fish. Life is good.

That sounds very interesting, must have been something to watch, hope your truck made it through that all right.

It was really pretty funny. She was so intent trying to do what she was doing, and keeping her car in her lane of traffic, she was oblivious to anything else. I guess she made it to work okay. I have watched people eat oatmeal, the usual eye shadow/lipstick stuff and reading the morning paper. Almost a relief to take the Transit (MARTA) to work most of the way, now. Oh, that poor old pickup had a heart attack shortly after that and I had to replace it. 10 years old and 250 K miles was about all it was good for.

Sometimes there are other distractions. I was on a jury(amazing in itself) to decide if a young guy was a meth/manufacture/dealer. He was/We did =99 years. What we were not there to consider was that four years prior he had come down from a meth high and crashed into the back of an elderly couple in pickup sitting in traffic at a red light at 10;30 AM. He failed the substance blood test that is mandatory in a fatal accident. He was uninjured. They were both deceased. He received probation as he was a first time offender. Then two years later he falls into a meth sleep again, crosses the centerline and crashes headlong in to a man taking his Mother to a Mother's Day dinner 11:00AM. He again tested positive, and was uninjured. They were both you guessed it. His trial has not come up for their murder. We did what we could. So, with meth use/sales being such a growth industry you can add that for your defensive driving worries.
