What should happen when I pull the trigger should the hammer go forward even with the mainspring out or is that what the mainspring is for, to power the hammer?

Here are pics of the short and long legs of the sear spring, I just figured out how to use my new camera and get it to focus LOL.

I am using epoxy for that but I broke the old one off and am going to re do it. But I want to make sure thats my only problem first and get the hang of reassembly because I want to do some upgrades also.
