223 powder

Post by Hakaman » Mon Nov 12, 2012 10:14 am

I have been using Varget for my 223 rounds, and have been happy with it.
I wanted to develop another load with a different powder for my National Match rifle.
I can't get any Varget right now, and wonder what other powders you would recommend
for competitive shooting.
thanks,
Haka

My shooting bud uses Varget with I believe Hornady 55 grain XTP bullets and it works well for him. Myself, I have been using Accurate #2230, which is basically designed for the.223. I have had good results with 50 and 55 grain Speer Spitzers and also 55 grain varmint nightmare bullets which sell for a very reasonable price. We have tried each others powders with the same bullets and the results were not good, would not shoot as consistently with swapping bullets. A lot depends on the bullet you are using, IB shoot a Savage BVTS with a 26 inch fluted barrel.
You have great day and shoot straight and may the Good Lord smile on you.

Haka,
I'm using RE15 behind the Hornady 75gr Amax for 600.
Short line is AA2200 behind 69gr Sierra's.

I also like varget for .223 loads over a 55 gr bullet. I've used 4895 with choose results and have talked to quite a few who like the new CFE223.

I couldn't find any of the above powders at Greentop, but did find some Accurate 2460. Worked pretty well at 22grains with 55gr bullets. They only had 1 lb containers, so I bought a pound to try. Went back yesterday to get some more and they were out. They did have A2200 and A2015. I suppose I could buy a pound of each, develop loads and then find another powder when they are out of those.

Or, I suppose I could buy 2-3 lbs and hope it works.

I suppose most of them will work reasonably well.

Doesn't it just figure, when you finally find something you like they run out of it. Keep an eye out for more of the AA 2460, when they get it in again stock up.

Did find some Accurate 2230 a while back as I was getting low, have nit used it yet as I have nut shot the .223 lately. Got too damn many .22LR's that needed turn at the range

The up side is that I can develop loads for a number of powders and won't be dependent on one or two loads.

The 2460 (22gr) and H335 24.5gr both shot pretty well today.

My friendly neighborhood wally world just started to carrying reloading components, plenty of Hodgdon powder and some Alliant powders.
