Trail boss

Post by bgreenea3 » Mon Mar 12, 2012 8:38 pm

I've been playing with Trail boss in 45acp, 44 mag, and 38 spl lately. I've learned a few things.

In 44 mag you get great reduced veocity loads and good accuracy with 240gr hardcast boolits feels like a 44 spl and the velocities are about the same ..... I'm liking it a a plinking load in my 4" 629 mountain gun (tapered bbl and quite lightweight)

45 acp feels quite consistant and so far accuracy is very good with 200gr hardcast swc. my mil spec Sprigfield made 1 big hole at 15yards with this load.

38 special just loaded 158gr hardcast lrn boolits with 4.0 gr and it fillled the case should give about 800fps or so so accuracy should be good, but I have yet to test. the other loads I've treied have been quite respectable for accuracy.... 148 wad cutters are on my shopping list for my next trip to the LGS......

Sounds good. I've used Trail Boss for several years in my .45 Colts. I haven't tried it yet in the .38 spcl. but probably will soon.

I'm using Trailboss in .38/.357 target loads with 148 gr. HBWC and 3 gr. TB. A real pleasure to shoot in my S&W 36, Ruger SP101. And in my SS rifle, no ear plugs required....even indoors. More a "whump" than a bang.

.38 spl loads with trail boss were quite good. Pretty much one big hole at 15 yards from my gp100.

44mag loads were pleasant to shoot and fairly accurate from my 4" smith.

Pretty happy so far with all 3 calibers tried with it.

I've been using Universal for .38, .45 ACP and .45 Colt. Trail Boss ought to be fun. What load/bullet weights are you using?

Tried .44 special w/Trailboss? Your .44 special loads were pretty good.

I assume that's the bullets and not the pistol going downrange.

44 mag cases with 240 gr swc over 6.6 trail boss, pretty much shoots like a special.

38 spl with a 158 hard cast lrn over 4.1 gr marvelous accuracy..

45 acp 200 gr hard cast swc 5.1gr marvelous accuracy....

The max charge with this powdered pretty much fills the case sonar double chafed cannot happen, and fires at a very low pressure so the cases are not stressed. You might want to try it in your 45 colt it is a good powder for big cases and lead bullets from what I've read and tried so far.
