Hummer Bummer

Post by Downeaster » Mon Mar 05, 2012 7:00 pm

Went shooting with the grandsons this weekend, and got a chance to do some semi-serious work with my Savage .17HMR.

Basically calm winds, shooting from a bench, bipod, good scope, Rifle Basix trigger (Accutrigger wasn't available when I bought this one) and 4 of us couldn't keep 5 shots inside a pie pan at 85 +/- yards, with three different types of ammo.

Not the shooters (other than possibly in my case) as we were blowing the bull out of the targets with a stock bull-barrelled 10/22.

Haven't really shot the .17 that much, and now I'm pretty disapponted in it. I'm thinking I'll put that in the truck when I go shopping to horse-trade for an 1100 12 gauge (see the shotgun section).

Is your scope loose.. I would check that first.

Don't think so, but certainly worth double-checking. Thanks for the reminder.

It might be the scope mounts, the scope, or the action screws. - I've been bitten by all three of those, at various times.

Generally the Savage 17's do pretty well. - I hope you can get yours back into the "sweet 17" category soon, without it costing an arm and a leg.

Downeaster, new to the tiny bullet gun myself, just got one the last week in December. Did have some wandering shot when the action screws loosened but not as bad as you describe, Normally shoot at 50 yards and can keep groups under 1/4 centers for 5 shots. Have done a little at a 100, but not much as the weather has just started to get nice enough to do some real shooting,
You have great day and shoot straight and may the Good Lord smile on you.

DOH!

You were right, the rear scope mount was loose. I mean REALLY loose. Like, Falling Off Loose.

Dunno why it didn't occur to me to check that at the range.

Glad it was something simple. If it was Loctited together and came loose means there was oil on the threads that needs to be cleaned off. Loctite needs a clean surface for it to stick to when you assemble it. The Med strength Blue is all you need on a 22. Then you want have to worry about again.

bgreene is an expert at loose sights. years ago, I bought an S10, canoe and a Mossberg target rifle for $230. Couldn't hit squat with the rifle, stuck it ito a closet and gave it to bgreene when I moved south. A while later he sent me a one-ragged hole target saying it shoots better if the sights are on tight. Ever since, I've checked sights for "tight" when I have problems.

He won't give the rifle back, even though I gave him a fine $100 pickemup truck chick magnet for high school.

Greener

That's the problem with these kids these days. No appreciation for fine vehicles.

I appreciated that rust bucket for over two years until it died beyond repair
