Single-Six off to Ruger Newport, NH

Mentioned a cylinder/barrel gap of .007 in earlier post. Email exchange with Ruger, was told their factory specs were .003-.010.

I had forgotten to pull cylinder back to remove play. My gap is .actually 010-.011. I don't have a .011 gauge, but ten fits, twelve won't. Gun is now on its way to Ruger, with a request for .004-.006. I hope they care to make me happy with it.

Gander was great, ships and receives it no charge, since I bought the gun there new. Smith here has 20 years background, says he wouldn't live with it , although within specs. Says I'm lucky it's a revolver, I might get it back in three weeks. Pistols go to Prescott, two months.

I miss it already. I'm having separation anxiety........

You obviously need a second single six. Green Top in Ashland, VA, has a number of used single sixes for only $300-$330, which is more than I paid for mine new not that long ago.

I can't believe Ruger's specs for cylinder/barrel gap are .003-.010. I think S&W's are .003-.007.

I just hope Ruger will still reset mine (probably a new barrel, easier for them to do) without argument.

I just checked the gap in mine. 0.005" . Comparatively yours was huge.

My first Single-Six in the Seventies was .005. Same model exactly, the only difference being the grip wood. Hooray they haven't put the internal lock on the stainless ones yet.

It's a shame to go through this whole song and dance because of a steel tube being .005 inches too short. I don't even know yet if they'll correct it (with no charge), since it is probably just within their specs. I'm just trusting their reputation here. Ruger having such large specs is the real problem. I don't think anyone with revolver experience, or any gunsmith, would consider anything over .007 acceptable on a new gun.

At least, I love this Single-Six. Action feels right, fit and finish are 100%, even all the screw slots are turned the same! Once the cylinder gap is right, it's a Rolls-Royce to me.

UPDATE:
Well, Gander Mountain smith thought it was sent the 17th by 2nd day air. Turns out pokey shipping dept. sent it 22nd by next day air (on Gander's dime, though, next day, wow.) As of this afternoon, the 24th, it wasn't in Ruger's "system" yet, but tracking confirms delivery. I can imagine how big a pile UPS brings them every day. So eight days, and they haven't even seen it yet. Stay tuned........

As of today Sept. 28, Ruger's had my Single-Six five days. A customer rep says it went to a technician this morning, but that's all the info she had. At least it's now making progress, I hope. Stay tuned........

Well, 12 days at Ruger and still no word from them. I will guess if they weren't going to correct it, I would have heard by now. Hopefully no news is good news. Stay tuned............

Talked to Ruger yeterday and my Single-Six will be at Gander for me tomorrow, 2nd day air. They only had it 13 days. Is that a record?

They did re-barrel it. Darn, now I'll have to shoot a few hundred rounds to break that in.........

I'll look it over, see what the cylinder gap is now, and hopefully get it to the range over the weekend. Stay tuned..........

Sorry folks, I just realized how lengthy I made this topic. I guess I did have a little anxiety.......

The invoice shows cylinder gap, throat, and pawl repaired; five screws replaced. So they are thorough, I have no idea what was wrong with the pawl, the chambers were clicking in place just fine before. And that got me new gripframe screws, too.

The cylinder gap now checks at four to five thousandths. Four is easy, five won't go. The action and trigger pull feel the same as before. One big improvement I see is that the shoulder around the forcing cone is now flush with the frame; it was inset before and a pain to clean.

Ruger has made me quite happy with my baby.

A range report next and I'll give this topic a rest !!!!!! Rain today, dry and seventy tomorrow should be a good range day.

Final post on this topic from me, I promise!

Took it out yesterday for 300 rounds, including 50 WMR for good measure. Still getting about three inch groups at 25 yards, which is my middle-age eyeballs. But, the sights set better now. Seemed before they were more to the right and down than normal, or compared to my Mark III. So that's a big improvement.

Second, I got less leading on the topstrap and cylinder in 300 rounds than I was getting with 100 before. And the shoulder around the forcing cone is flush with the frame now. It was inset before, and a PITA to clean.

So my Single-Six is great now, thank you Ruger.....
