MKIII 22/45 doubles_HELP PLEASE???

Post by copter_dad » Wed Feb 25, 2009 3:38 pm

New MKIII 22/45. I have installed VQ sear, trigger, and extractor. I have done the grip mod using 1911 bushings, mag safety mod and slingshot mod. I have adjusted the trigger according to the response to my question 2 or 3 posts down. Everything seems to work ok at home running dry. Today, first time at the range, the gun doubles about once every magazine. It doubles faster than I can release the trigger to return. I haven't measured the trigger pull, but it is almost too light. I would guess under 2lbs. I haven't messed with any of the parts other than installation. Ideas???

Any doubling is unsafe. I would like you to reinstall the factory sear and sear spring. Retest your pistol for doubling.

Do you have a factory hammer or is it a VQ hammer?

There was a few sears from VQ that could cause a problem like this, by swapping back the original we can narrow the problem down more.

Thanks Bullseye! I was hoping you would respond. I am using the factory hammer. I will install the factory sear tonight and CAREFULLY test tomorrow. Copter_dad

As a precaution, load only two or three rounds in the magazines until you are absolutely sure that the sear will not double or go full auto.

By the way, it never went full auto. It only doubled and stopped. There were rounds left in the magazine.

If it doubles, it has the potential to go full auto.

I had to back off on the trigger over travel screw to get the sear to release.

That's normal to have to adjust the pre and overtravel screws if you change sears. The faces are in different places and that changes the take-up position. If everything else is the same and all you've done is change the sear, you got a sear problem. Write to Nic Volquartsen and describe the problem, installation, and the troubleshooting process. Explain the outcome with the factory sear replacement. He will likely offer to send you another sear.

Here's his e-mail address [email protected]

He will answer your e-mail. I usually get same day responses, some within the hour.

Bullseye, I sent email to Nic after business hours yesterday. I had a reply by 9:00 AM today advising me to return sear to VQ for replacement. He stated they had made some recent changes in the machining specs. Thanks again for the help!!!
