Two, like new, Winchester 94's

Post by Jack D » Sat Jun 25, 2011 8:32 pm

Today, I struck a deal with a man to sell/trade a tandem trailer for Two, like new, Winchester carbines and some cash. One is a 94AE in .45 Colt and the other a 94 "Golden Spike Commemorative" in .30/30. Both have been fired, but just barely. The transfer will take place Monday after the banks open. I've checked OSP for "stolen guns" and they gave them both a clean bill of health.

I really have no use for either, since I don't hunt or collect, but I do like my guns. Someone give a reason for keeping either, or both, of these guns?????

Because one wants to, and is able to.
That is all the reason one needs.

I suppose you're right MH. It's just that I hate to have an unused gun just sitting around doing nothing. I've owned .30/30's and can't say I really enjoyed shooting them. And a commemorative? Is it really made to use? Lots of polished brass. Looks like something to hang on the wall and stare at, to me. The .45 Colt could be a fun gun to shoot, however, but I've heard ammo is expensive in that cal. (I haven't checked). I could buy dies and reload for it......still thinking about that one. If either were in .357 Mag. you couldn't pry it from my hands.

Maybe I'll sell both and buy something in a .357 Mag.

Problem is, I have always liked the Winchester carbine. I like the way it feels in my hands, the way it handles...everything about it. Maybe I'll just sit in my easy chair and just hold them, one in each hand. The wife, undoubtedly, would not understand and have me committed.

My first lever gun (in the early '50s) used ammunition that came in little rolls. It had companions that used the same ammo. None cost more than a dollar or two, but our farm was remarkabley clear of hostile creatures, so they must have been effective. Ah, the imaginations of youth.
Anyway, For some reason I've never owned a real '94, though have shot several that friends own. Not a bad gun, but I fell in love with the Mdl. 92s
I don't think winchester ever built a slicker action, or stronger (except the '95) My 2 - 1 rifle, 1 carbine) are in .45 Colt, and have as companions 2 New Vaqueros, and one Colt SAA all in .45 Colt. Obviously I reload for them. Basically, it comes to about 12-15 cents per round, depending on components. I use soft lead bullets, and Starline brass, and load to about 800 fps. That is an accurate load for me, and a pussycat for recoil.
I much prefer them to the .357. But that is just my preference. I also have a S&W 'N' frame in .38 Spl, that I load really hot (++P) sometimes, and the .45s are milder in recoil (by my perception anyway.) Your mileage may vary. Bottom line is, I think, It doesn't matter what gun or what caliber as long as you enjoy it. You only have to please yourself. To quote a view from a man I respect-"Just the view from my saddle"

easy keep 'em and shoot or enjoy them for a while and trrade them away if you find something you like better.... or someone who really wants yours. 45 colt is chaep to reload once you get ovet the set-up cost and brass.

A lot of the cowboy action shooters like the M94 in 45LC. Perhaps a new avenue for shooting for you.

I don't believe there are any ranges around here that offer that kind of activity. At least I've never heard any talk of it. The nearest range is over 30 miles from me.....a long way to go at todays fuel prices. That's why I set up a handgun range in my home shop. I can travel about 10 minutes to public BLM land, but can't do it alone, due to health concerns.

I'm thinking I may sell them both and use the proceeds to buy a new .357 rifle.....maybe the new Ruger 77/.357. I can reload for that and light loads have a light report that might allow me to shoot on my own property without disturbing the neighbors, too much. If I clear some trailers out of the way, I can get a 50 yard range. Maybe a carpeted tube to shoot through to muffle the report even more.

Of course this all depends on my buyer/trader going through with our bargain today. And I believe he will.

Check out this website- http://www.oowss.com/ These guys may be able to direct you to a group fairly near you. I understand that health concerns can override competing and this may also be the case for you with cowboy action shooting. Movement is a part of this style of shooting and if your movements are restricted this may not be for you.

My buyer just called. He is wanting to modify our agreement. The Golden Spike 94 was passed down from his father and his brother wants it. So he's just bringing the 94 AE .45 Colt as a trade and paying cash in leau of the Golden Spike 94. I'm OK with that. The Golden Spike 94 was not something I really wanted anyway and maybe it should be kept in his family. He's on his way.......So if anyone wants a trade?????? A 94, .45 Colt in like new condition for a .357 rifle????? :wink:

Update: Got it.

What you could do, if you don't have one already, is use the extra cash for a .45 Blackhawk. That would be a very nice pair to own.
* 2 Ruger Bearcat stainless, w/ EWK ejector housings & Wolff springs
* Ruger SP-101 .22LR, w/ Wolff springs
* 2 NAA Guardian .32ACP
* 3 Zastava M70 .32ACP
* S&W 15-22 Sport (.22LR AR)
* 2 Ruger SR22 .22LR pistols
