25 - 400 Yards

Ok, here's a ?, with a Remington 700 cdl 300wsm, is it possible to set my scope at 100 yrds, 1inch High and still hit a deers kill spot at 400yrds, without moving the scope at all.

I know this may seem like a goofy question, but I hunt an area where I might get a 25yrd shot or a 400yrd shot all in the same day!. So can I sight the gun in at 100 and hold dead on from 25-400yrds?

Not with out a elevation change, and it will be more than 1". You can go with a scope that has a range finder with auto comp. There are scopes with laser now that auto range and set the scopes elevation. I would run a ballistic table for your caliber it will tell you more on how much elevation would be needed.

I have done this on a Rem 7mm Mag. If I recall it's setup to be 1.25" high @ 125 yrds, which puts me dead on at 250. This is a very flat shooting caliber, till you get past 250yrs, then more elevation is required.

I think you would find that you would miss your target by roughly 15" or more.

Well the data I've seen shows that if you sight in 2.6" high at 100@, you will be 3" low at 294 yds... the rest you guess....

I just ran some data. Assuming that the kill zone is 10 inches in diameter and that you are shooting a 150 grain bullet at 3200 fps. In still air, standard pressure.
If you sight in 4.27" high at 100 yards you will be 4.70" low at 400 yards, essentially point blank loading.
The intermediate stops are 6.11" high at 200 yards and 3.35 inches at 300 yards.

You are right on w/ the 1.1" at 100yds. From 25-200yds. hold your crosshairs dead on assuming youre shooting an average low mounted scope. At 300yds. hold 5.4" over the center of the kill zone and at 400yds hold 15.9". Nice rifle. Good luck.

Thanks Mr Nail, for the advise!. I just got the rifle a week ago and have not even gotten the chance to shoot it yet.

I do think that I will sight it in at 100, instead of a longer distance.
