I found this article on another forum, and know there are more than a few 1911 fans here. An amazing relic of WW2:

That artifact from the battle is just a reminder that someone had that pistol secured to their hip in a holster. The degree of damage the pistol sustained exemplifies the sacrifice that some soldier made fighting the axis, because clearly someone sustained a significant amount of damage from that flying shrapnel.

I noticed that the left side was in good shape. I'd like to think that the pistol taking so much maybe saved the wearer's life, somehow.

A good story for a real collectors piece. But...
The gouges in the slide look fresh for something picked up 71 years earlier than the picture. They just seemed awfully bright. It could be the care taken over the years.
The pistol has no more provenance than the tag in the story. The story doesn't say who picked it up, when or under what circumstances. It also doesn't say how the current owner came by the pistol.
