Member ruger22 enters 21st century with new LCR .357!

Post by ruger22 » Sun Jun 17, 2012 12:20 pm

I don't want you guys to have a stroke, but I gave up and got a Good carry gun yesterday.

Gander had a good sale on the LCR-38 ($75 off list) and LCR-357 ($150 off list, including a rebate). Sales are the only time Gander has a good price!

After a brief debate, I decided on the .357. $475 out the door for a $599 list gun ain't bad!

Deciding factors: Vesatility of a .357, though I may never shoot larger than .38+P. The stainless frame definitely preferred over aluminum. Heavier, but only by 2.7 ounces according to Ruger. Carpenter Stainless too, including the cylinder, which is what they use on the Alaskan. Cylinder walls are thicker than on the .38 model, though still heavily fluted.

I couldn't pass up that price, today is last day, and Gander only had two. I bought the "in the back" one.

After I cruised the ammo section, this will be a carry-only gun. At $21 to $35 a box, this won't be a fun gun, for sure. I couldn't believe some of the SD ammo running $25 for 25 rounds.

I guess now I'll have to change my user ID........ :D

Don't change your ID... I won't remember who you are ;-)

Grats on the .357.

I used to have a Colt Border Patrol and it was a dream to shoot.

Enjoy!

Good decision on .357 versus .38. I've liked the feel of the LCR's, but haven't fired one.

.357 for SD because it's loud, has a big flash and the recipient will definitely have an owie. Not sure there is that much difference between .38 and .38 +P.

You made a great choice IMO.

You will like the LCR in 357.

There is very little difference between the Std 38 spl and +P loads in respect to velocity. If I recall only about 50fps maybe a little more depending on mfg.

Now I have to get the consigned stuff sold to pay off the gun. Seeing that sale, I warmed up a credit card, which I had not planned to do!

Then I have all the extra doo-dads to post on eBay. It's amazing all the accessories yoiu have to have with a gun. I had thought the auction income would make a good extra payment on my card, but having gone with a .357, I'll need that cash for ammo!

I'll eventually have a range report, but right now I don't even have one bullet for it.

So far, I know the fit and finish are very good. No rough surface anywhere, not even in the cylinder window. Cylinder lock-up is not the best I've seen, but as tight or better than my SA revolvers. One curiosity, the cylinder latch (bolt?) is small, half the width of one on a Single-Six or Blackhawk.

The trigger is outstanding. Smooth, and I would guess no worse than about seven pounds. I can definitely feel the "flat spot" I've read about. Right as the cylinder latches, and before the hammer drops, there's about an eighth inch of travel. Easy to stop on that spot, and correct your aim before you finish the squeeze.

For SD, I don't think I would want to shoot a .357 load. It's more then enough
to do the job? Plus it is violent discharge compared to the 38sp. How about the
muzzle flash in dark environments. The 38sp is much more manageable. With
that being said, I do like the choice of the magnum over the sp, for the fun of
shooting magnum rounds every now and again, plus it is a little sturdier.

I had planned on .38 Special. My thought on .357 is over-penetration. Not enough people consider that when they choose a SD gun and ammo. A .357 round is good on auto glass, bad on bystanders behind the bad guy or a wall. I do like the .357 model being more rugged, worth the slight weight penalty. And it's good having that option if I want it.

Now I just have to finish my "liquidation sales" to pay it off and get the extra goodies for it, like ammo......... :D......... I'll be July getting to the range.

Sounds like your happy Ruger, I think you made a good choice. I have been
thinking about getting a pocket revolver, and the Ruger and Smith have been
on the top of the list. I hear some say buy the Smith because it has a proven
track record, more so then the Ruger. My personal experience with Ruger is
that their C/S is extremely good. Smith also has good C/S, but I have had to
send a couple of Smith's back for repairs the first week after I bought them.
They fixed them promptly and they are some of my fav's. My friend has a 442 in +p,
so I might get the Ruger just to be different, also realizing I would get a fine piece
of machinery just the same.
