Disappointing

Post by gcp » Sun Apr 01, 2012 9:33 am

After attending a function on Thursday night I was pumped on purchasing the SR1911 by Ruger. I found it to be a good looking pistol, nice wood grips, all in SS, and totally made in the USA so how can one go wrong. The next day, before placing on the counter my $699+tax I decided to shoot it first and what a disappointment! I shot 2 different SRs and they both had gritty, traveling triggers that broke at 5+lbs and their accuracy at 15 yards was average at best. I had read such stellar SR reports on the net and was looking for positive reasons to seal the deal but ultimately it became a no go for me.

Granted I have 3 very nice 1911s, to include a aluminum frame Brazil made Taurus that cost half the price, which would shoot circles around these two Rugers. Was it my bad luck? I hope so because I have always counted on Ruger to produce great pistol and am greatly satisfied with all of mine but they are older so I hope commercialism hasn’t taken a strangle hold of a great company.

I believe STI is all USA made, in Texas, more expensive too. I have read a lot of user feed back on other forums and Ruger QC on their 1911 is all over the place. Some are good to some totally not functioning at all. They are using MIM parts in the ignition groups from what I have read. Like any casting if done right you get a good quality part other wise it junk. Sig has had problem with their hammer/sear MIM parts too. The one in my 229 was junk, felt like gravel in the trigger. It did clean up but took a lot of work.

I'm afraid that mfg are cutting so many corners to save money Quality has certainly suffered. The ones that have good quality hand fitted parts cost 4-5x the price of the Ruger. I would love to have a Les Baer. Their entry level is very nice and far beyond some other high end guns. The problem is most of their guns are 9 months out to get. I may just build my next one, then I know what I have in quality. The down side is it the same cost as a WC or LB.

Thanks for that report. I had an idea bubbling in the back of my head that I sorta wanted one.

Guess I'll pass and save the money for that J frame Smith I'm keeping an eye out for.
An empty weapon is just a very expensive hammer.
