Ruger Alaskan .454 Casull

Post by greener » Sun Aug 01, 2010 9:21 am

Fellow next to me was shooting .45 colt from a big DA revolver then started making really loud noises with it. Turned out to be a Ruger Alaskan in .454 Casull. Said he had got it from his brother for a pretty good price. He had large blisters on his hand from too close and personal contact with a shovel and 10 rounds of the .454 Casull did a fine job of popping them.

I fired one round. Lots of (manageable) recoil. Lots of noise. Round was 3" above POA at 15 yards. All the other guys rounds were going a bit high. Trigger was smooth. Sights were quite good.

Fun to shoot. I guess you could shoot less expensive, lower powered .45 colt (like .38 in a .357 mag), but it seems to be something you might only need as a back up for big bear. Last time I checked, the griz population around Richmond is low, I think I'll stick to thinking I'm doing big round shooting with my .45 colt and .357 mag.

kinda like my 44mag s&w mountain gun, neat to have and shoot but no REAL NEED to have it.................other than it is a joy to shoot 44spl loads out of it and the 4" tapered bbl looks right on it. and it feels good in the hand.....but I guess thats a bit different than a snub nosed super redhawk in .454

I stopped at .44mag a long time ago. I don't shoot that much these days, but I still enjoy my .44spl and .45 Colt. A hot charged .44mag would probably turn these old bones to powder.

I tried a cylinder full in a Redhawk once, never again unless I would have an actual need for a hand cannon. I felt no pleasure in shooting .44 Mag. My comfort threshold is .357 or .44 Special.

I didn't think about your 629 when I wrote that. I'd be happy to have something like that, but most of the rounds would be .44 special. So, I guess if you shot the Redhawk with cowboy .45 Colt loads, it might be a fun shooter.

Well if I have to take on any hogs I can handle them with this. It's a M-29, .44Mag. It's the Dirty Harry model with a 61/2" barrel. In the picture it has the rosewood stocks that come with it too. :D
