AR-15 Complete Upper?

Post by Hakaman » Wed Oct 17, 2012 8:34 pm

I was considering this combo:
http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/re ... ng%20Rifle

http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/si ... e=30|79.99

Some questions regarding this:
1) Will this combo allow for proper sighting adjustments (work together)?
2) Do you think it's possible to tap one of the apertures so I can install micro-sight threaded sight?
3) Is this a complete set up to my lower AR receiver, when installed, it will be shootable? In other words, nothing else is needed besides ammo?
Like OM said, it just takes a little money.

With the 20" model you should be fine with that rear sight setup. Your micro sight should install into the sight the same as it does on any other AR style aperture. The complete upper comes with the proper magazine and all internals to operate the upper in 22LR. The only concern you would have to check is will this upper mount properly to your brand of lower using the standard fore and aft pins.

You might want to look at these guys, they are in some strange place called Livonia, MI
http://leapers.com/search.php?criteria=sights&x=0&y=0

If you do Amazon, they might have what you want there at a lower price. Free shipping for prime.

I checked out the site you suggested, and they do have an attractive rear sight, for a good price, this is the one I'm thinking about:

I'm getting ready to order the upper, I think?

I went to the LGS and they actually had this rifle in stock:
http://www.colt22rimfire.com/index.php? ... cal-rifles
It was nice to get some hands on feel for this rifle, but that's where the pleasure ended. Having a RRA's NM rifle has spoiled me, and the Colt didn't compare to my RRA. I just think the quality isn't there on some of the AR-22's. On the way to the LGS I thought I was going to be toting a new rifle home, but I just couldn't spend $499.99 on something that didn't give me a good feeling. I expected it to be somewhat lighter then my RRA, but to my surprise, it was much lighter, making me want to say "where's the beef"? Not sure what I want to do now, but I'd sure like an AR style 22lr to plink with. They also had a S&W carbine style for $430, but that isn't what I was looking for. Maybe this would make me feel better:

That looks like the same Upper 22 AR assembly that I posted from the CMMG website If Brownells actually has one of these in stock you may want to pick one up because it is a little less than what CMMG wants for the same part.

Ok, this is what I am thinking about ordering(it could change yet again):
http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/re ... 1.aspx?avs
and
http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/si ... 12958.aspx
and finally
http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/bo ... 78747.aspx

about $485 shipped.
I am thinking I need item 3 to hold the bolt open after last shot, is this correct? if so, How is it installed on the magazine?
and
This is a flat top upper with an F marked front sight, if you could explain how the rear sight I have ordered will work? Flat top, F front sight, standard rear sight?
thanks, Haka

The difference between an "F" marked AR front sight post and a standard issue AR front sight post is the "F" marked front base version is slightly taller. The rear sight you're planning to use is made for use with the standard height AR front sight base. Since this is a 22 dedicated upper, the slight height difference shouldn't affect the adjustments of the sights. If you do encounter problems with elevation adjustments, you do have the option of getting a shorter AR front sight insert. The height differences between the front sight bases are just .04" but with the 20" barrel a little height change doesn't make that much difference, it's the carbine 16" barrels that have trouble with the two differently marked front sight base heights. The difference between the standard front sight insert and the shorter front sight insert are .03", or almost the difference between the two sight bases.

The CMMG bolt hold open device adapter just slides over the top of the magazine and is held in place by the top pedestal portion of the mag.

I don't see any 22 conversion magazines included in that dedicated upper's parts list. You may have to add a couple of those to the order. http://item.brownells.com/primary/cmmg- ... /index.htm

Yes, I noticed that, and see the need to order them. When ordering from Brownells the merchandise (at least the upper) is sent from the CMMG factory, it does not come direct from Brownells. I'm not sure which is the best to place my order, Brownells or CMMG? Neither has all the items I want, and two orders have to be made to get what I want. CMMG has both the 10 rd 'short skins' , and 25rd 'long skins' magazines, where brownells only seems to have the 25rd long skins. CMMG also offers a SS bolt and collar with forward assist, an option I not sure Brownells offers. CMMG doesn't have the rear sight I wanted. Such is life.
With all that being said, I took my 10-22 rifle to the range today to practice some offhand shooting. I mounted a scope on the rifle and shot at 50ft. I noticed similar difficulties holding the rifle still, on target, as I do in service rifle OH shooting. The big difference is the weight of the rifle is much less then my AR, but the trigger on my 10-22 is a stiff pull, which will force to control the pull separately from supporting the gun, a good thing I think. I was thinking of adding some weighting to the hand and butt stocks to get the OA weight to be close to my AR. Maybe with a buttstock cover with lead inserted into it's pocket? Have to think about it.
Thanks, Haka

Once you get comfortable with the rifle you will have the same tendencies regardless of weight. It's kind of like pistol shooting with centerfire and rimfire pistols, your shooting style is your shooting style and you will do the same things with each. A service rifle trigger is 4 1/2 pounds, so having a heavy 10/22 trigger and a lighter rifle weight is not a bad thing for practicing follow-through. May even improve your hold with the AR because you'll be focused and concentrating on steadying that rifle after the shot breaks a lot more.

You can always order what you desire from both suppliers.

I have thinking the same thing, the harder trigger pull of the 10/22 might even be a bit more challenge, which I think is a good thing. I am going to try and simulate the size of the 200 yd target at 50' and go from there. I personally thing this will help my service rifle shooting, we'll see. I think part of my reason for not dry firing alot with my AR is that it isn't very exciting, no target punching or steel dinging. Practicing with my 10/22 will be fun because I can see results happening. I still would like a AR 22lr style rifle, but my 10/22 will work for now until I decide what I want to get for sure.
thanks,
Haka

I found a picture of Greener's conversion bolt for the AR15.... its a surpurisingly simple unit that makes the ar a blowback 22 lr.
