I just plunked down my dough for a Ruger SR556. I would like to lay in a store of ammo -- does this gun have any "preferences" that way? Was looking at Federal 55 gr. which seems reasonably cheap. Anyone out there have experience with this rifle?

I would think this rifle is able to shoot any ammo, like any AR-15. If you want to get good quality ammo, I suggest loading your own. You can get bulk 55gr bullets pretty cheap which, when loaded, will be a better shooting, half the price, and more accurate round then store bought. I have never bought bulk loaded ammo before, but if you do, make sure it is reliable ammo.

You might look into the Hornady 52 grain V max in the 50 round boxes for around the 25$ mark. Very accurate and you get good brass for reloading, have shot a lot of it in my Savage heavy barrel bolt gun.

Hopefully you will get better performance out of a 55gr (M193) bullet than I have in a 1-9 twist barrel. Generally I've had to use heavier bullets than that to get the accuracy I want. The 62 gr (green tip M855) has given me acceptable performance. For my best performance I find that The Black Hills 77 gr match ammo (Mk 262) does the job.

Thank you for all the good info. The 77 grain did in fact yield very good results. Not bad with 55 grain either.
