I just loaded up a new to me load for my old Ruger. I was just wondering what some of you fellow's might use. Here's mine.
.45LC
Powder, Win-231 6.5grs. OAL 1.580"
Case, New R&P's
Primers are CCI-300's
Bullet is a RNFP 250grs
According to my source's checked I am about .5grs under max to .7grs under. I always check about 3 or more source's before I make up a load. I made up 12rds for a test run.
Anybody out there rolling their own?

It all depends on the caliber. I have no idea what your load is (you failed to mention that critical piece of info) for so go with
231 is one of my favorite powders, But I like 2400 for lead cast for my 357mag.

I'm not sure which caliber but this link http://www.reloadammo.com/45cload.htm has sme pretty good reloading data. For .45 colt it shows 7.0-7.5 gr of 231 to be good for 250-255 LRNFP.

Hopefully your gun is a 45 Colt. Should be marked some where. 231 is one of my favorite powders. The only Blackhawk I ever had was in 30 carbine, with a 7 1/4" barrel. It was a blast to shoot. It did clear the pistol range when I was shooting it. The blowby was pretty bad and it was extremely loud, but a blast to shoot. I had a pistol scope on mine and used it to shoot armordillas. Liked watch them explode when they got hit. Traded it off years ago and replaced it with my 6" Ni Custom Python....

Alliant Green Dot is a another very versatile powder, just a little bit slower burning than W231. Use to use a lot of it back in my days of shooting many shells on sporting clays. Being a little slower than other shotgun powders it softened the recoil a little and I used it in 12, 20 an 28 gauge, did not own a 16. Still use it in .38 Special and .45ACP, would also be a good light load in .44Special and .45LC.
You have great day and shoot straight and may the Good Lord smile on you.

Those 3 are, damn near the same thing. If we could see the burn rate numbers it would be interesting.Bullseye wrote:Green dot and 231 are very close in burn rates. I also tend to use IMR 700X which is right in that group on the chart.
