Need some Reloading Data

Here is an article inre of a load for the 45acp 185gr SWCHP w/Match lube.
Last November I had the honor to shoot next to Gil Munoz.
Gil is a master shooter and all round good guy.
At that time I hadn't started reloading again. (I reloaded back in the 70s.)
So I was using off the shelf reloads. Gil noticed the box of reloads and
advised me that these loads are probably too hot for bullseye shooting.
(The reloads were loaded at 900 FPS.) So Gil loaned me a box of his
reloads to shoot in a match that day.

The first three rounds scored 30-1X at 50 yards. HELLO!!
This got my attention right away. I realized I better start
reloading real soon.
Gil's load data: Star Swaged Lead 45cal 185gr SWC H/P W/Match lube
Win 231 powder 4.6 grains
The rest of the load data I didn't get from Gil.

This is the website I got the info from:
http://www.pelhamfishandgame.com/reload ... tloads.htm
I am trying to find "Load Data" for some Zero 185gr SWCHP bullets I bought, with some Winchester Ball "231" Powder. Question: can my Zero bullet be loaded with the same "grainage" as the Star? I also need the OAL if you could. Any help with load data for the bullet and powder I have would be greatly appreciated.
thanks, Hakaman

4.6 grains of W231 is a very light charge for a 185 gr bullet. Lymans 48th edition shows a starting charge of 5.4 grains of W231 with a 200 grain SWC. 4.6 grains should be safe with any 185 grain bullet made.
I load mine to a length of 1.250"

Here's some of my pet loads:

200 grns LSWC
4.1 grns Green Dot powder
Federal #150 Large Pistol primers

I also like
200 grns LSWC
4.0 grns Bullseye powder
Federal #150 Large pistol primers

I don't care for using the 185 grain bullets when I reload and I stick with the LSWC hard cast bullets.

Bullseye, what brand of hard cast LSWC bullets would you recommend? I read/hear a lot of solid recommendations for swaged stuff, but never anything on hard cast.

Thanks!

I gather that because Billy Bullets are moly-coated they don't have/need any wax type lube in the crevasse around the bullet -- so what's the point of the crevasse? The only reason I can think of is so that the lead shaved from the rifling has a place to go.

There's some kind of wax in the groove in mine.

These are all good loads but I'm kind of old school and have used Lyman's data for more years than I can remember. My favorite using a 200 gr lyman cast bullet (#452460 mould) and #2 alloy hard cast is 3.5 gr of Bullseye for 731 fps. Very accurate and makes a pound of powder last a long time. I only cast using the 452460 mould but for a 185 gr hard cast bullet, lyman shows 4.9 gr of Bullseye for 966 fps.

I like the WW231 powder, it's one of my favorite powders. I use 4.7 on 9mm 125gr LRN.

231 does not burn clean if loaded to light. Works best in the upper 80% of the reload table.

But if the bullet is under sized you do not get very good groups. It's best to slug your barrel then sized the load accordingly.
