Pete, your shooting pretty good yourself, I suprised myself a little with my timed and rapid, I don't usually shoot both that good. Went to the range earlier today and shot pretty bad, 267. I'm right handed and have recently been having shots low and right, I usually can't feel or see it happening. Anyone have any tips for fixing low and right shots for a right handed person?

Generally that is caused by a right-handed shooter tightening their grip to counter recoil or aid in recovery prematurely. Maintain a firm and consistent grip from sight alignment all the way though the shot and you should see the shots migrate back toward the center again.

I am stuck - weeks 3 and 4

Post by Pete D. » Mon Jan 10, 2011 11:17 pm

I am stuck in the high 270's.....one shot away from the 280s.
Gotta keep plugging away, I suppose. Each of these has a five ring shot in one of the targets.....gotta stop that.
week 3:
SF - 88
TF - 93 1X
RF - 96 3x
NMC = 277 4x

Week 4:

SF - 86 (Tried a Doc Young trick - all ten shots in less than a minute. Didn't work quite as well for me as for him.)
TF - 95 2x
RF - 96 2x
NMC = 277 4x

H-S Victor, Ultradot, CCI SV.

Bullseye, I took your advice on maintaining a consistent grip and it seemed to help. I had a few shots low and right but I kept them in the black, so it's getting better. Also over the weekend I went to a gun show and bought a Houge grip, without thumb rest. I really like the feel and recommend them to any Ruger owners. I have small hands and dont like most grips but these feel pretty good.

Glad to hear that! Its easy to induce errors into our shooting and believe we're countering the effects of recoil. The truth is, by the time we actually feel the recoil the bullet is already gone. However, our bodies react by anticipating that recoil and this anticipation happens prior to the projectile leaving the barrel. It directly affects the bullet's flight path and is masked by the pistol's movement in recoil. In short, all that prep work aligning the sights and carefully working the trigger is disrupted in the final few milliseconds before the projectile leaves the pistol by our mind attempting to get a jump on the next shot in the magazine. Using consistent marksmanship techniques and a definitive follow-through on each shot will greatly reduce this anticipatory effect and improve overall stage scores. One must remain cognizant of this symptom even after it has been corrected or it will gradually creep back into the forefront of the shooting technique as the shooter falls back into their natural habits which were learned over time.

I know that there are only four weeks in the month but I was practicing and decided to shoot another match - just to see what would happen. Shot a better than usual SF and a less than usual set of sustained fire targets. And what do you know - another like the others : NMC = 278 4x
SF - 94
TF - 92 3x
RF - 92 1x
These are steady Expert scores, which is my classification, but not like the Master stuff from the other fellows.
Looking for a breakthrough am I.

Well.....another just a shot away from the 280s.
One of these days, I'll stop shooting those sixes.
SF - 90
TF - 95
RF - 94

NMC = 279

Pete

Shot a gallery directly after with the .45. Almost the same score, 278.

I had a pretty bad day at the range, I could not shoot slow fire no matter what I did. Slow fire is always the hardest for me but today it was bad, not a single ten.. Came back with a decent rapid fire, and felt a little better.

Ruger MKIII Ultradot,CCI Blazer, 50' indoors.

SF 78

TF 94-3X

RF 97-6X

NMC 269-9x
