Cleaning Vises???

I've never used one, but thinking of getting one maybe Tipton best vise since I have an AR. They look like they would make it much easier to get rods smoothly through and help speed up the process and minimize the chances of damage. Any thoughts or expericence ????

Have never used one of those specialty vises, for general gun work, I use a medium size bench mounted vise with a set of padded jaws.

I believe that Chad is referring to a rifle cleaning station as opposed to a machinist vise. That Tipton looks really good, I think that they are a must have to hold the rifle safely and allow you to assure that the rod goes through the bore guide straight. Also really excellent for scope mounting chores. Regards

I realize that and damn near bought one. My 4-1/2 inch vise is mounted to a 2x6 and can be bolted in several positions on my workbench, and with the padded, 3/8 rubber belting, jaw liners I use it for all kinds of work from cleaning to repair and scope mounting and stock work.

I can't take claim for that idea, my local friend/gunsmith/dealer has been in his present location for 46 year and they have a 6 inch vise with the same rubber belting over the jaws on all o their benches, it must be all right. Us it for every thing including cleaning and the gun is never going to move when you have it clamped in.

I've used cleaning stands for years, they do make the job a lot easier. They can be as simple as a few pieces of wood screwed together to some of the more modern rigs like the Tipton vise or the MTM Site-n-clean. I still use my thirty year old service rifle cleaning stand I made out of oak.

I have one of the older Tipton cleaning stations that I have used for years. Mounted many a scope with it. I recently bought a Tipton "Best" vise because someone had them on sale. I put it togeather but haven't really used it yet. I think it will be a lot better than the old one. Should work well for the AR's and pistols.
