S&W 422 as an investment?

Post by greener » Mon Aug 25, 2014 10:08 am

Saw two S&W 422's at the Richmond Gun show yesterday. the 6" barrel model was $579 and the 4" barrel model was $489. The 6" was more than twice the price I paid for a 6" from the same dealer about 3 years ago from the same dealer. Didn't see anything special about these. They didn't have much signs of wear.

Maybe it's because they sort of look like a Model 41. Anyway the appreciation is a lot better than passbook savings.

I remember when the 422's came out in the late 80's. They were supposed to be a lower priced target shooter/plinker loosely patterned off of the M-41 style. The differing feature was the barrel position which was much lower to the grip than the pistol's profile. It wasn't as popular with the public as the pistol which was dominating that market - Ruger Mark II.

So, when the boss complains about what I spend on firearms, I can tell her they are investments. I think I've tried that. At least she hasn't suggested I cash in on them.

I bought a Marlin 1894 in 32-20 five or six years ago for 600 bucks, now used ones go for 1200.
