Hogue Monogrip on Single Six

Post by ruger22 » Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:20 pm

Had my first range trip since October two days ago, and decided my Single Six needed a Monogrip. At least temporarily to be more definite on sight settings. The smooth SA grips squirrel around in my winter dry hands.

A LGS actually had one. I had to file out the corner of the square hole in the grip frame to get the stirrup on. The original screw took a major push against the rubber to start in the threads, so I used a slightly longer screw. Easy installation, huh?

I've seen several postings around the Internet where the Monogrip is not always a slam-dunk fit, especially on stainless Ruger SAs. Just my luck! Supposedly more variation in manufacture.

I know that first hand, as I have one extra factory grip, and two Hogue grips in wood , that are all a tiny bit small all the way around. The original grips it came with don't cover the lower corners.

This Monogrip fits with about a 16th of backstrap exposed. No problem with a .22, but might bite if I had a Blackhawk. I think it's butt ugly, but fits my hand good. I'll see how it does next month.

I'll take fit and function over aesthetics everyday.

Same here. If it works it is good enough ... unless its a collectible/relic.

The field trip and grips report is great. But for new shooters not familiar with the SA ... a picture would sure help. Or is it really that ugly?

I am glad the grips worked out for you Ruger22. I also prefer grips with some grip to them. Makes me wonder how Jerry Miculek does it though, he only uses smooth wood grips and he puts cornstarch on his hands before shooting.

Simple enough to post Hogue's pictures, on a stainless Blackhawk. It's not so ugly, really, just not as pretty as wood.

These are the coco bolo I've been using:

If you look close, the grips in the pictures fit about like mine do, a little metal past the grips.

I had a Pachmayr rubber grip for my previous Single Six. It looked better than the monogrip, but never felt right. Maybe checkered wood in the future.

I like the Cocobolo look way better. I do see what you mean tho0ugh. Both look like they are just a smidge too short of all the way up.

How sticky are the rubbery ones?
For instance, would they catch on clothing if holstered?

The Hogue isn't sticky, feels like a Glock. I remember the Pachmayr felt more like an innertube, not sticky itself, but would stick to a sweaty hand. I had it years ago, Pachmayr may use a different rubber now.

I bought one, thinking it would fit my Blackhawk Convertible. I was wrong.

I put it on my Single Six to check fit, and it did, but it was beyond ugly, and massive overkill besides. I normally value function over appearance myself, but this was just too ugly to bear.

Anybody that wants those ugly grips can have it for the price of postage. Blech!

Who would mar this sort of gorgeousness?

I'll likely keep it on to double check my sighting, then go back to wood grips and work on my grip. The monogrip and the dot sight kinda overwhelms a Single Six...........

I know how that goes. My groups are twice as big, and my hands are half as steady. I know I'm not 25 anymore....... :(

Same feeling here, Downeaster. I thought the monogrip would provide a better hold on my Super Blackhawk .44 since it was wearing a Millett Red Dot sight on top, but, good grief, the thing looks like a shillelagh!
