Mark iii ammo

Post by harper_07 » Sun Mar 22, 2009 10:47 pm

A friend told me this weekend that you should only shoot High velocity ammo in a Mark iii. according to him standard velocity does not have enough power to work the action. Anyways i could swear i have read on here of people shooting standard velocity ammo.

My Mark III will shoot whatever garbage I find, I installed a Volquartzen extractor and even the weakest ammo ejects fine. I had an ejection issue but it wassn't ammo related.

1. welcome to the forum
2. I presume this is a "new" (to you) MK3
3. clean and lube it often as you shoot the first several "bricks" of ammo
4. Std-Velocity is what I almost always use, no cycle troubles.
5. avoid the extra-hi-velocity ammo, especially as your normal ammo,
the extra SLAM will cause excessive wear... and shock..
but the ocassional few rounds "just as a test" should cause no harm.
6. avoid the Aguila-Colibri ( Mex: Eagle-Hummingbirds )
these have NO powder, only primer to propel the lite-bullet.
they come in ~300fps and ~600fps.
they just might not make it out of the bore!!
and leave you with a much bigger problem...
... "Sub Sonic" ammo will likely do just fine... but I wouldn't suggest it.

stay with the common Federal-AutoMatch, Winchester-333,
most Bulk-Packs of .22 ammo...
but the general opinion is DO NOT SHOOT Remington "ThunderBolts",
they have a tendency to Lead-Up a bore!

good luck... which "model" is your MK3 ?

I only shoot standard velocity. I did replace the extractor at the suggestion from Bullseye. No more ejection problems after that. 8) 8) 8)

I will shoot just about any ammo in mine without problems as long as there is no "R" on the headstamp.
You have great day and shoot straight and may the Good Lord smile on you.

NO DERN "R" ON MY RIMFIRE AMMO EVER AGAIN!!!!
But I don't know if them federal 550 count wal-mart bulker boxes are high velocity as I have no boxes! I just dump then in 1 quart sour cream and cottage cheese tubs until full... My MKIII .22/45 works fine with it.

Just looked at my last box setting on my bench, muzzle velocity is listed as 1260 FPS. Got to go to Wallyworld and see if they have any available.

Federal ejected better and '333' was well mannered in my MKIII. Since putting in a VQ extractor, it can shoot anything w/o errors. I've been shooting whatever WalMart sells cheap.

Do it.

I am very excited so i do a ton of research.

thanks to everyone for the info

When the pistols are new they may not cycle standard velocity but after a good breaking in period most anything will function. Once the bolt polishes out the receiver tube it will cycle with less resistance and lower powered ammo will function fine.

i am in Indiana this week. I have been watching your posts as well. Never seen the spitfire ammo until today at Gander mountain. They had tons of it. they even had 9mm and .45. 9mm was at least double cost of what i paid at wallyworld last week at home.

There's probably a good reason they had tons of it. Funny, the local GM had a ton of it? I thought they just got it in or something. Probably most people know it's not worth beans is why.
