6 7/8" tapered barrel

Post by melchloboo » Sun Nov 23, 2008 9:48 pm

Is 6 7/8" tapered barrel for a ruger mark III an appropriate platform for bullseye? I notice mostly bull barrels on the line, I assumed that was for the extra weight? But if a good deal presents itself, can the tapered barrel be accurate for bullseye as well, and if weight is not an issue?

John Dreyer recommends using a Ruger Target pistol with a 6 7/8" tapered barrel.

Sure, the tapered barrel will shoot just fine for bullseye.

6 7/8 Ruger for BE

Post by stork » Mon Nov 24, 2008 12:19 pm

I've done a lot of Ransom testing with a variety of Rugers.

I've found the 5 1/2" to average slightly better accuracy at 50 yards than the 6 7/8" tapered and slab sides. Granted, I've only Ransomed 3- 6 7/8" Rugers, but I have Ransomed 6- 5 1/2" and have found them to be about 1/2-1" better with target ammo. They all shoot better than I can hold.

While this only reflects my experience, I do use my most accurate 5 1/2" for Bullseye.

It seems to me that they both shoot equally well until you get a few clips though them and warmed up then the lightweight tapered barrel needs a sight adjustment where the bull does not.

I haven't read the links from the experts, but this seems to be my experience. I shoot at 25 yards with color change targets from 8 inches to 4 inches (What ever I get cheap.)

This isn't a scientific results because I shoot outdoors and fight wind from time to time.
