Pretty well said.bearandoldman wrote:If you generally do carry a firearm, then you should carry the handgun of your choice as you are the one that you feel comfortable carrying . Is .22 a new trend?

This may sound bad but, If you ever have to use your weapon in a defensive situation .........you kill the him.......He was just trying to harm and or end your life . or the life of a loved one ,Stop him for good! ................also you dont want to go to court with him ...........I hope I NEVER have to use my weapon but if I have two he aint going home ever ............I am ...............I have already had to pull my weapon and it convinced the BG to change his mind , we where both lucky his knife wouldnt have faired well agaisnt my .45 ............he turned and ran .I went home and changed my shorts ............my advice save some cash and get a BIGGER gun............................Hopefully Ive not affended anyone .......being a armed citizen is a big responsibility ..stay safe

Well said, you state my thoughts exactly. You have a right to protect yourself, you can shoot to stop the threat, if the BG hapens to die, too bad, it was his choice to attack me and not mine. I really hope I don't have to kill someone but, I am too old to run or fight so???? Remember not to pick a fight with an old gy as he will most likely kill you .keithj wrote:Ruger 22

I agree, just how many people will you have to shoot in your lifetime? A buck a round vs. 0.03 for .22LR is pretty ridicules.bearandoldman wrote:If you generally do carry a firearm, then you should carry the handgun of your choice as you are the one that must feel comfortable carrying it . I should cheap out on my life or the life of my wife and leave a waitress a few bucks tip for a so-so meal?

In that case you wold want at least a 6 inch barrel, so that you can get a good grip to swing briskly and many times.raw6464 wrote:,22 for a defense works if you hold the gun by the barrel and hit the assailant over the head with the butt of the gun... other than that give me a gun that put's a dent in the middle of the cartridge when you pull the tirgger.

As much as I like .22's, my preference in SD runs to bigger bullets. However, I don't know many folks who would take a couple .22 rounds to show they don't hurt.bearandoldman wrote:In that case you wold want at least a 6 inch barrel, so that you can get a good grip to swing briskly and many times.raw6464 wrote:,22 for a defense works if you hold the gun by the barrel and hit the assailant over the head with the butt of the gun... other than that give me a gun that put's a dent in the middle of the cartridge when you pull the tirgger.
My point, too. Any of you big bore advocates willing to shoot yourself with a couple of .22LRs and tell us it didn't get your attention?greener wrote: I don't know many folks who would take a couple .22 rounds to show they don't hurt.
I would like a larger caliber SD gun, too. But, my main concern in a confrontation would be the confidence to stay cool and accurate in my actions. I don't think I could do that with a gun I couldn't afford to shoot to my satisfaction. I want to be able to nail the BG in any spot I want without thought or hesitation.
When I go to the free Forest Service range every month, I always have some goal. I shoot until I do it, between two and three hundred rounds sometimes. That's about seven bucks worth of Wally World .22. What's 250 rounds of 9mm or .380 cost?

I don't think that you have to put hundreds of rounds through a bigger bore SD weapon. Most of my .22 handguns aren't suitable for SD carry because of barrel length or the optics. They are great for fun shooting and marksmanship practice. All you need from the SD guns is enough rounds to assure proficiency.
I have an S&W airweight that is great for carry. Shoots .38 spl +P and has enough recoil that you don't want to shoot a couple hundred rounds. I shoot 10-25 rounds from it every now and then to keep in practice. The day I shoot the .38, I can shoot a couple-three hundred .22's with no problem.

Well said and very true, Greener, my friend. I carry one or two of 3 guns at all times, an SA Micro Compact, an SA V-10 and a KelTec P3AT, all can be a hand full too shoot ans are not target guns. For S/D we are not after target accuracy as we will not have that much time for precise aim under stressful conditions, S/D is a point and shoot situation. At 7 yard 6 shots on a sheet of writing paper is good enough. Remember as you are drawing a precise sight picture the BG is charging and/or shooting at you also. Hey, if you want to stand there and aim, it is your choice. I shoot a lot of .22 and do shoot the carry guns now and then just to make sure they and I are on the same page. When it comes to saving my butt or a buck, guess I put more value on my butt, can always find anoher buck ot two.

Shooting ANY 22 will make you a better shot with your carry gun. IMhO it removes the tendancy to flinch and drop or pull your shot. A great compramise to shooting 250 rds of centerfire would be to shoot 50 rounds of the big bang stuff and 300 rounds of rimfire... best low budget practice would be if your 22 had the same operation as your carry gun like a ruger 22/45 and a 1911, a taurus 22 revolver and your snubbie 38, or your glock/sig/1911/cz and a 22 conversion (my sgt uses one in his AR for CQB practice)
There are plenty of examples of folds shot with a 22 and not noticing it until they bled out later, after doing harm to the guy who shot them. and don't forget the army once figured out that big bullets work better than little fast ones in the Phillipines when the .38's they went to, after the .45 colt Single Action Army, didn't stop the determined tribesmen so the army came up with the .45acp .
.22 is great if its all you have or if its all you can handle but for dangerous encounters the bigger the bullet the better.

I am a firm believer for big bullets for bad guys, just like the Arny was after the .38's c could not stop the charging Moro's in the Philippine's. Yeas a .22LR will eventually kill, but what good is it if he kills you too? Everyone talks about being able to expertly place a .22 round for effectiveness, That is one thing at 25 yard on a stationary target and another thing on a adrenaline filled BG intent on doing you great bodily harm as he is charging you from about 25 feet and getting less all the time. Defensive shooting is not a controlled aiming situation, it is a point and shoot, 6 shots you can cover with a spread out hand is very good. I shoot a lot of point and shoot practice with my 22/45's and my carry guns are a choice of 2 short barrel 1911's and a back up KelTec P3AT.

You dont need to shoot the "big gun " all the time .And even if you do shoot it alot yu dont shoot big dallor ammo for practice. I handload for 9mm, 38 speacil , and .45 acp .I shoot alot of lead bullets or there plated counter parts . all my brass is picked up and saved from IDPA matches or bought as once fired from ranges or gun shows so I'm not spending that much to shoot .........Now for alittle story ,I was in a shooting misshap when I was younger . There where 3 boys myself included and three dads we where out shooting .22 at cans for fun one wkend ,well long story short . One of the boys (his first time out ) got done shooting ,he laid the rifle across the edge of the table we had set up thinking it was unloaded .well someone dumped the table gun falls gun goes bang . Bullet hits me from about 8-10 yds in the shin , ya it burned abit but nothing like you would expect ,well to hospital I go the whole time telling my dad that I any shootin with that kid anymore period .so bullet hit bone and bounced off they removed a small bone chip and stiched me up . ya iwas lucky but still a .22 aint got what it take to put a bg down period...........................
Your not out to hurt anybody... your out to kill him! If your pulling out a firearm for self defense just to hurt the assailant does not make any sense. Why would I carry a gun that may or may not do the job?greener wrote:As much as I like .22's, my preference in SD runs to bigger bullets. Following you logic hitting someone over the head with the butt of the gun also hurts... and we can take that logic down to a kick in the groin.
There's been more than one past historical situations where multiple shots from a center fire gun couldn't stop drugged up charging assailants... I'll carry my 357.
The which caliber threads never have a resolution. They usually have a few good ideas.raw6464 wrote:Your not out to hurt anybody... your out to kill him! If I were really, really concerned my SD gun would be a short barreled .44 mag loaded, literally, for bear. A compact .45 would be good, but for convenience and comfort I've sort have settled in on carrying a snubbie .38 special +P. I think almost any caliber will do the job if the shots are well-placed, including those from a Beretta Bobcat or a Walther P22. I'd just prefer +P 125 gr JHP going at a good clip.
