Bad LCR-22

Post by ruger22 » Wed Feb 15, 2017 2:00 pm

Went to the range Saturday the 11th. The trigger on my LCR-22 locked up. Got home and disassembled it. Found the transfer bar and the trigger return spring both broken. Ruger got it back today, and are sending me a SP-101.357 snub in even trade. I requested the exchange, since this was the third LCR I've sent back. I don't trust one to save my butt if SHTF ever happened.

I bought a 22 and 357 LCR as a carry / practice pair. Now I'll just have to match my two SP-101s, even though the 22 has a 4 inch barrel, and the .357 is 2.25. Still workable. At least my LCR holsters and speedloaders also work with the SP. No loss there, and I still have the 357 LCR to consign at the LGS. All I'll need for the new SP is a Wolff spring kit.

I've changed my signature to reflect the new lineup.

I hope your new one better meets your expectations. Three times returned is not a very good record.

Nice that someone is awake here.... :D ...

Got my tracking number, the SP will be mine tomorrow. I'm hoping they send an above average example. I passed up four .22 SPs before I saw one that suited me to buy.

Is this a possible flaw in the LCR with a 22LR only or in other LCR models. I have the 38 + P LCR and I have really liked it as a carry gun it works perfect.

I haven't read or heard of any others with those troubles. Mine may have just been a fluke. The first two were right after they hit the market, and may have just been early "bugs". I sent back the .22 because the ejector was burying itself into the aluminum frame, then the .357 cylinder latch jammed solid. Then the replacement .22 had the trigger spring and transfer bar break. Three was enough, so now the SP replaced the .22 LCR, and my .357 LCR is at the LGS on consignment.

I got a good SP. Just minor tool marks in the cylinder window. The barrel is clocked almost perfect, they could have tightened it maybe a degree farther. Barrel gap is .003 and .006, giving .003 endshake. The trigger is smooth and lighter than any I've tried in stores. I'll likely just use the strongest Wolff spring, which is 12 pounds. Factory is 14.

This one has recent change of a tapered cylinder. The first 1/4 inch is tapered inward about a sixteenth, supposed to improve holstering. Also has a change where the raised area around the cylinder latch goes closer to the grip, so there is about a 1/4 inch long groove for accessing the latch screw. I don't know why that was done.

One thing that bugs me on these is the tiny overlap of the cylinder stop, maybe 1/32, but S&W is the same and I've never heard of any cylinders sliding off the crane when you hit the ejector. The Six series revolvers didn't need that little stop on the frame.

I keep thinking I'd like an SP101 in .22.

Like I posted earlier, fit and finish vary on the .22 SPs. I passed up a few, then ran across a nice one. Still needed Wolff springs before I was happy, trigger on all of them is too heavy. It's a nice gun, and I enjoy it. If you see a good one, grab it. Main problem I saw was badly clocked barrels, leaning the front sight.
