might be a dumb question,but...what do [or did] shooting gallery operators do to their rifles to make them less accurate ???

Gallery Rifles

When I was growing up, the traveling circus would show up every few years and the rifles I shot nearly all had their front sights 'tweaked' so they would not shoot straight.

I just looked at the sights and compensated for it until I got it right.

Some of the more obvious ways was to almost tap out the rear sight so the rifle shot WAY left or right, but that was easily spotted.

I had one old guy tell me once that the carnies used to bore out the barrels to get rid of the lands and grooves. Never verified that myself, but it would sure mess up accuracy I imagine.

Anything to make a buck and us 'rubes' are just free money to them.

Mess with the crown on the end of the barrel and accuracy will also be affected.
