Re: Howa 1500

An update on this rifle: I decided that I did not like the 1:12" twist, and want the 1:9" twist that Howa currently offers instead. So, I removed the barreled action from the Boyds stock, removed the Rifle Basix trigger and re-installed the factory trigger, put it back in the factory Hogue rubber-co...

Re: Hearing Protection?

I generally use the foam ear plugs, I buy them in bulk. On the other hand, sometimes I manage to wind up at the range without any. - This is readily addressed by bending over to pick up a couple of 9mm brass, and inserting one in each ear, with the primer end in. Strangely enough, they work about as...

Tikka T3x

The new Tikka T3x rifles are starting to show up in quantity now. They are improved models of the popular T3, slightly but not a lot more expensive. The ejection port is larger, the bolt shroud is metal instead of plastic, more scope mounting options, the synthetic stocks are a bit better, etc.. Wal...

Re: S&W Victory .22

I still like the Ruger better.

Having said that, I've been tempted by the Browning Buckmark pistols lately.

Re: Brought Low by Loose Scope Mounts

It is definitely doing better, but still has a way to go. I am getting out once or twice a week these days to shoot, always early in the morning before things start to heat up.

Brought Low by Loose Scope Mounts

I was bitten by the old problem of a loose scope ring. The rifle was not grouping well, and I kept thinking something was wrong with the bedding, the barrel, and the various hand-loads I tried... This went on for weeks, and I was thinking seriously about purchasing a new barrel for the rifle. Then I...

Re: Bullet Weight!

I tried 100 of the Hornady 55gr FMJ-BT bullets, and they worked so well that I have another 500 of them coming in a couple of days. - They grouped very much like the Hornady 55 grn V-Max. I appreciate the tip about those bullets, they are perfect for the kind of shooting that I do. In my five-shot g...

Re: Bullet Weight!

The 2,000 fps figure was correct. With the 55 grain bullets, 12 grains of AA5744 gives you something around 2,000 fps. These reduced loads are from the Speer manual. They are generally accurate, and of course are very inexpensive to put together. At 100 yards for target shooting, the paper never not...

Bullet Weight!

After putting in some time assembling a heavy-barreled .223 bolt rifle, I finally got to the point where I was ready to shoot it, see what it would do. I had some bullets from my previous .223 left over, 68 grain match BTHP bullets loaded to a moderate velocity. There were no firm expectations, just...

Re: Browning Black Label 1911-380

Until now, only Beretta offered a good-sized 380, the Cheeta. I've always had a certain fascination for the Beretta, a beautiful firearm, and now I'm just as fascinated with the new Browning 1911-380. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if it were offered in .32 ACP too, but I don't think that is likely to...

Re: Howa 1500

The weather did not cooperate for almost a week, it was windy around the clock for what seemed like a long while. Finally though, I did get to take the rifle out and shoot it. One advantage of the method that I use for crowning a barrel does not require that the barrel be removed. In fact nothing ha...

T/C Venture

I got to look at a T/C Venture the other day. I have seen them online before, but as usual the images online don't tell you much. It was an older rifle in 22-250 that had seen some hard use. I was impressed with the action, it looked good and the fat bolt with three lugs was very smooth with no wobb...

Re: M41?

Years ago I owned a M41. I bought an extra slide release, welded a small bit of flat stock on it and created an extended slide release. Final shaping, polishing and finishing the thing took a lot more time than putting it together. If I had it to do over again, I would use a checkering file to check...

Re: Howa 1500

Thanks for the kind words, 35bore. It's a range gun, but may do double duty as a coyote rifle. Here are pics as I reduced the barrel and re-crowned it: - Click image to see it larger. Re: Howa 1500

Santa decided that I did not really need a muzzle-crowning tool, so I had to finally break down and use my own money. The tool should show up in a couple of days. I also have a new chronograph, two pounds of my favorite powder (AA5744) and some 45 grain .223 bullets on the way. In anticipation of ge...
