Most of my shooting will be off of a bench at 100 and 200 yards. - Most of it at 100 yards as I am a bit lazy about walking to the 200 yard target butts. In the field, I doubt that I'll ever take a shot over 200 yards, either. - I might plink at a rock on a distant hillside at longer ranges, but for...

280 vs 30-06

Howdy, I have a commercialized BRNO military Mauser that I intend to rebarrel. It has a nice 22" barrel chambered in 30-06, but I am wanting a 24" barrel with no dovetails or screw holes forward of the receiver for this particular gun. Maybe a slightly heavier contour too... I like front-heavy guns ...

I got to fire a few rounds through a Ruger 44 carbine some years ago, that belonged to a relative. It was more accurate than I expected, and was pleasant to shoot.

I always wanted one after that, but I haven't gotten around to it, yet.

Weighing the rounds will show if any are heavier or lighter than they should be.

It it were me - I would pull the bullets and dispose of the powder.

I am a ham radio operator, and hams like to have a "go-kit" for emergencies.
Here's my "go-kit":

My "emergency go-kit" is the same, with the addition of a bottle of laxative pills.

Note the logo on the SS shot cup.

Mine has the same twist rate. I think all of the Savages in 6mm are like that. I finally made it to the range, with two loadings: Federal blue box 100grn soft points, and some handloaded Nosler 95 grn ballistic tips ahead of 37 grn of H380 for @2850fps out of my 24" barrel.. In-between Hodgdons' sta...

I bought a custom Savage in .243 last year, and there was a recommendation for 70 grn bullets for optimum accuracy on one of the pieces of paper in the box. I believe we have the same twist rate, but my barrel is a 24" sporter weight barrel. I would like to report on how well the 70 grn Nosler solid...

I like all kinds of rifles. I believe though that there is enough discussion of 'black rifles' to support a separate section. Having discussions of black or tactical rifles separated from sporting arms would be better for both, allowing a bit more focus. In some ways, I think a 'Black Rifle' or mayb...

I love my Smith 686-6 6" fully lugged 357 revolver. It is accurate, comfortable to shoot, don't have to chase brass around, shoots spl's or magnums, built well, simple design, and the S&W name has some nostalgic respect to it. I presume it will always have a decent resale value. Just my 2 cents, Ha...

Right now, I am trying to learn how to dope the wind. For this purpose I always bring along my Savage 93R17BTVS, a bull-barreled .17HMR rifle in stainless steel with a laminated thumb-hole stock. http://www.savagearms.com/images/firearms/finder/ginormous/93r17btvs.png On a calm day, this rifle is ac...

I've used diesel fuel as an expedient, and was pleased with the results. This is another smelly solution. The diesel fuel cleans up quickly, and leaves a thin, oily film behind that discourages rust. I've used it on machinery for years, and recently tried it on a few firearms. The ATF sounds interes...

I have enjoyed air rifles since I was a child, and have owned most of the major brands and designs at one time or another. My introduction to precision airguns can in my 20's, with a Gamo underlever air pistol that was outstandingly accurate, though less powerful than the american-made air pistols t...

Years ago, I worked at a gunshop in the Dallas/Ft Worth area. I did gunsmithing work there and often ran the counter as well. There was a couple of nice guys who would come in every once in a while to visit. They were brothers and both did engraving work on firearms. These guys went squirrel hunting...
