Re: What new firearm/s have you bought lately?

I really like the 6" Ruger GP-100... I have owned several S&W 686's in 6" over the years, including one with a special front sight with elevation adjustments. The GP-100 is more robust, heavier, but seems to have just as good a trigger. Not as elegant as the Smith, but still kind of purdy.

Re: What new firearm/s have you bought lately?

Today I ordered two new handguns, a Bersa Thunder two-tone in .380 ACP for my wife, and a 6" SS Ruger GP-100 in .357/38 for myself. I wanted to get a Beretta Tomcat for my sweetheart, but they were unobtainium, so I went for the Bersa instead. She is wanting to take the CC class and drag it around i...

Heritage Rough Rider

We got one of these with the 22LR/22Mag cylinders and a 4 3/4" barrel. After looking at it, and shooting it a bit, I've got to say that I am impressed. Despite the alloy frame, the little pistol has a nice heft and feel to it, and when you pull the hammer back through the four clicks, and use the ni...

Re: Bolt Action 22

Lately we have been shooting scuffed-up golf balls. We set then up at fifteen yards, then see how far downrange we can keep hitting them. So far, it looks like 75 yards is about as far as we can fairly reliably hit them, from the bench with the 22. Nobody has sent one out to 100 yards, yet. Shooting...

Re: New Stock for Model 70

The new Leupold 3-9x40 in silver came in, and my son Charles (Mini-Me) mounted it for me. http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff206/arwatch/Firearms/Win%20model%2070%20270WSM/DSCN0176_zpsh03ogqz8.jpg http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff206/arwatch/Firearms/Win%20model%2070%20270WSM/DSCN0179_zps5qxeh...

Gun Cleaning Patches

I use the "Bag of Rags" sometimes seen in the paint department in hardware stores. What you get is a plastic bag full of clean white T-shirt material rags. - This is very inexpensive compared to buying patches or cutting up T-shirts. I use a office-style paper cutter, the kind with the curved blade ...

Re: New Stock for Model 70

No deer hunting for me this year. I thought that I was going to, but family obligations keep me from traveling to North Texas or New Mexico.. Hunts here are very pricey, I can't see two grand for a mule deer, or five for an elk. I have a chance for a pig hunt, in the Glass Mountains just to the nort...

Re: New Stock for Model 70

I decided in the end that the red rubber pad will do. Even with the heavier 150 grain 270WSM loads that the gun likes best, recoil is stiff but not a problem. No bruising at any rate, and that's where I draw the line. Hogging out the fore-end to float the barrel was more than I bargained for. Quite ...

Cosmoline

Today I was cleaning cosmoline off of a military rifle, a Yugoslavian SKS. I had a big blob of it on the end of a Q-tip, and decided to show the stuff to my wife.

"Look at this stuff..."

"Can you hear better now?"

Re: Bolt Action 22

The model 60 is a real booger to get back together again. Unless there is a part to replace, I take the trigger/action group and swish it around in Varsol or diesel fuel a bit to clean it up, then give it drop or two of lubrication after it dries and call it done. On the XT22-TR, the action was kind...

Re: Bolt Action 22

It is much like the model 60 but a bit more accurate. I'm thinking the difference is in the trigger, which is way better than the one on the autoloader. The barrels seem to be much the same. Weight and balance are very similar.

Re: The new Ruger Mark IV Target and Hunter

It seems like a definite improvement over the previous model. Switchable barrels would have been nice.

Bolt Action 22

Recently I went through my rimfire ammo, and found all kinds of stuff that my Marlin model 60 semi-automatic would not digest. Various low-powered rounds, and a collection of .22 short ammo. This got me started looking at 22 rifles that will shoot anything. My model 60 only functions well with high-...

Re: New Stock for Model 70

Thank you, Bullseye. Most shooters do not care for stainless with wood, but I'm a big fan. The rifle shot well with the composite stock, but I haven't tried it with the new stock yet. The barrel channel needs to be opened up a bit to float the barrel, and I intend to glass bed it before I try shooti...

New Stock for Model 70

Recently I traded into a Winchester model 70 in stainless steel, with a composite stock. (270WSM) http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff206/arwatch/Firearms/Win%20model%2070%20270WSM/IMG_4594_zpszhcqnwh7.jpg The composite stock was OK, but my favorite model 70 stock has always been the Sporter model,...
